Jaime Lannister was a fan favorite anti-hero from Game of Thrones whose character arc was essentially wasted towards the end of the series. Despite this, Jaime was a loveable character whose moments of comedy and attitude won the hearts of fans. Not only that, he sported some of the best costumes on the show, which is fitting seeing as he came from the wealthiest family in the seven kingdoms, the Lannisters.
From his leather down jackets to lion-headed armor, there’s no shortage of stylish selection from Jaime’s closet. However, like any good show, there’s more than meets the eye with even the simplest things such as clothing. Beneath the surface lies some interesting trivia and facts even the most astute GOT fans may have missed. With that, here are 10 Hidden Details About Jaime Lannister’s Costume You Didn’t Notice from Game of Thrones.
10 Family Collar
One of the most well-remembered jackets worn by Jaime is his light brown leather riding coat, worn for numerous reasons. However, take a look at the collar overlapping the top with no button. This was done on purpose for Jaime, and Tywin too, as it leaves an asymmetrical cut inspired by Japanese soldiers. Essentially, this relaxed collar allows for quicker and larger movements by the wearer. For someone like Jamie Lannister, this is nothing short of perfect, as he is one of the best swordsman in Westeros.
9 Targaryen Aesthetic
Fans may not know this, but Jaime Lannister almost squired for Prince Rhaegar, but the Mad King wouldn’t have it. Despite this denial, Jaimie’s clothes are similar, if not the same as Rhaegar’s. His western lands style is reminiscent of the Targaryen’s style, with the asymmetrical cut giving it away.
Jaime may have killed the Mad King, but his respect toward Rhaegar never diminished. On top of that, his knighthood is a reflection of that respect, as Jaimie is capable of putting aside skills for honor where it’s due.
8 No Bright Without Dark
Jaime Lannister is talented with a sword, and it reflects in his clothing choice and hairstyle. But once he loses his hand, his confidence dwindles, along with his bright-colored clothing. From gold armor to dark leather, Jaime’s confidence is represented in his clothing.
Notice from Season 1 to the finale, Jaime goes from obnoxious gold and long blond hair to a bearded, dark leather-wearing man. Not only that, but his attitude has ceased, having been snatched away with his right hand. Jaime’s colors tell a story by themselves, one of pain on a long journey towards redemption.
7 No Lannister Apparel
Once Jaimie joins with brother for the Battle of Winterfell, he sports the same leather jacket and armor instead of his traditional family apparel. This was done purposely to show his transition from Lannister madness to fighting for the living. This is the furthest Jaime ever was from Cersei, both literally and figuratively. His detachment from her is shown in this clothing as a disheveled man.
6 Lannister Lions
As a knight, Jaime is required to wear armor both on and off the battlefield as a member of the Kingsguard. In the episode “Spoils of War,” Jaime is seen wearing a set of armor with two lion heads on his shoulders. The sigil of House Lannister is a lion along with the saying, “Hear Me Roar.”
It’s no accident that a man of Jamie’s caliber is wearing armor with two ferocious lions head, but ironic at the same time, considering how weak he is without his hand.
5 Enough Steel for Three Swords
Jaime Lannister is endowed a Valryain steel sword by his father, being the favorite child and all. However, in the show, Tywin states this is the only Valyrian steel in their house. In reality, there is another Valyrian steel sword within the Lannister family called Brightroar. This was owned and used by King Tommen II on his expedition to Valyria, however, he got lost along his way and was never seen again. Talk about risking it all to win big.
4 Daddy Issues
Tywin’s favorite child was always Jaime, but now and then they’d get into some nasty arguments over family problems. But despite their differences, Jaime still sports a similar jacket to his father, along with Cersei.
Whether this was done to honor the outstanding performance of Charles Dance or done purposefully, it reflects the Lannister’s power over the Seven Kingdoms. Even with Tywin gone, his wisdom is exercised by Jaime and Cersei from time to time, especially when they put family first.
3 Dying Colors
Despite Jaime’s redemption, he still chose to die with the woman who made him the monster he once was. His lack of color change in the final episode of his character represents his descent into darkness, cursed by the love he has for Cersei despite Brienne’s efforts. His heroic efforts in the Battle of Winterfell are rewarded by a budding romance with Brienne, where a warm fire resides close by. But in King’s Landing, there’s nothing but dust on his clothing, foreshadowing what he’ll become because of his love for Cersei.
2 Golden Hand
Jamie’s life takes a turn for the worse when his hand is cut off by Locke, a pawn of Roose Bolton. The golden hand that takes its place is a painful reminder of his reliance on family wealth and his obnoxious attitude.
But real fans of GOT know that it wasn’t Locke who cut his hand off, but a Dothraki. Though the Dothraki were under the command of Roose Bolton, there’s no mention of Locke in the books. In the show, Jaime doesn’t see the ruthlessness of the Dothraki until the episode “Spoils of War”.
1 Hand At The Ready
Before losing his right hand, Jaime always kept his sword on the left side of his hip. This was his natural positioning of the sword for easy access whether in battle or protecting the king. However, after he loses his hand the sword rests on the opposite side, with Jaime’s left hand almost always lying at his waist. This is done because Jaime is nothing without his right hand and must do everything in his power to ensure he gets his sword as soon as possible if the time came.
