The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones aired in 2019, marking the end to a television phenomenon and ticking off a great many fans who didn’t think the final season was up to snuff. Some fans said they swore off the franchise entirely and wouldn’t watch the prequel series House of the Dragon, which premiered last year. But there must have been enough newcomers to replace them, because House of the Dragon was a massive hit.

At the moment, that’s the only Game of Thrones spinoff that HBO has produced, although at least one other has been ordered. And there could be more beyond that. For instance, star Kit Harington has approached HBO about making a sequel series exploring what became of his character, Jon Snow, after the final curtain fell on season 8.

We don’t know if that one will ever make it to air, but it’s raised eyebrows because of the possibility of other Game of Thrones veterans returning alongside Harington. Liam Cunningham, who played the level-headed smuggler Davos Seaworth, sounds game. “I did send [Kit] a text saying, ‘Better Call Davos,’” Cunningham told Den of Geek with a laugh. “I haven’t heard anything back.”

You probably know more than I do. I wish them the best to whoever’s involved in it, and if the check is big enough, I might even show up again!

Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) likens Game of Thrones to DraculaStar Wars

Whatever people felt about the Game of Thrones finale, the original show remains popular, something that doesn’t surprise Cunningham. “I think Game of Thrones is one of those things that after each decade, people are going to discover as if the previous decade had forgotten it,” he said. “I think it’s going to be rediscovered. I think it’s a bit like Dracula. Dracula gets rediscovered and reinterpreted every few years. The original Game of Thrones was a phenomenon. Nobody could have predicted that it would turn into some kind of cultural phenomenon, and they’re very, very difficult to design. You build it, and they come or they don’t come. In that case, they came in droves.”

Star Wars has been going on forever, and some of them have been great quality, and some of them not so great. It’s a world that people are fascinated with, and long may it continue.

As it happens, Cunningham didn’t pull that Dracula reference out of nowhere. He’ll soon be playing the captain of the titular ship in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, about a crew who are unknowingly transporting Dracula across the ocean. When the vampire gets hungry out at sea…well, let’s just say he isn’t satisfied by rats alone.

The Last Voyage of the Detemer comes out in theaters this Friday.
