Game of Thrones (moreso the book series it’s based on: “A Song of Ice and Fire”) has a setting the scope of which we *rarely* see in fiction, and not just in terms of size. The sheer number of different and unique elements within the setting is absolutely staggering. It’s incredible that any author could create a single, cohesive narrative arc that uses so much material.
And yet, somehow, that’s exactly what George R.R. Martin did.
In this video, we try boil this incredible world down into three major components: Geography, Culture, and History.

What I think makes those old histories so compelling is that there's some truth to it.
Wow. One of the more eloquent demonstrations of completely missing the point I've seen this month.
GoT isn't fantasy, it's fictionalised history with the names filed off and editor mandated SFX glued on.
Martin never needed to do worldbuilding; it's THIS WORLD.
He's not been shy about telling everyone this.
I think languages are the most important part of fantasy worldbuilding but it's not mentioned here.
I disagree.
I think one of the main cornerstones is mystery- the questions, puzzles, mysteries, and secrets that compel us to explore the histories and cultures of the world for answers.

I really like this video and the format you've got going on this channel! But those spinning cogs are pretty distracting, just my two cents…
5:12 actually, they don't wear flamboyant colours, in that Sam chapter, where he meets…Mercy/Arya we're told they mostly wear plain (dak/black) clothes.

I think you forgot a huge portion of the world building, the people. Not just their cultures but how they react to the world, its through them that we learn about the world. What stories they feel are fantasies, how they view other cultures. The reasons for certain geographies being used. Even in the books all of the chapters are named after the character whose perspective we are observing, and without that character's perspective we are unable to learn important aspects of the world. Martin controls what elements are at play in a specific conflict merely by showing us certain characters at specific moments, like the battle on the wall, had he written it from stanis' perspective it would not have read as well as it did from jon's
Game of Thrones world is literally crap. It's not complex and it definitely isn't realistic. A winter lasting even a year would completely devastate the human population. Oh and there's dragons and zombies, but very realistic, I mean the one girl does get continually raped only to later kill her child to resurrect the man who was raping her, that type of thing happens all the time. And there's sister fucking, and that's always realistic.
Could you give more examples on the cultures? You said the list goes on and on and I'm so interested in more examples
But dragons weren't considered to be mythology in the GoT world. They are extinct animals.
Aegon conquered the seven kingdoms 300 years ago with dragons and the Targaryan kings after him used to breed them for quite a while. So, that's all relatively recent… They have actual dragon skulls in the Red Keep and Harrenhall still bears the marks of dragon fire.
People just don't believe that the stories of Daenerys' dragons are true because they don't think they would have survived, and even if they believed it they doubt they would be very large and thus a danger, like when Tywin explained to Joffrey that the last dragons the Targaryans had were cat sized.

LOTR had a much deeper, broader and more epic world and story in general than ASOIAF. Still, they're equally entertaining, I just prefer Tolkien

Good video. The world building in GOT has always been the draw for me. Even if I do like the show and books and at times feel like I can't get into the book. The world building brings me back. Because I want to know more about their legends and myths. Who will die next and what the characters will do to overcome their trials.
Really liked this video, the amazing worldbuilding of GRRM is what got me hooked to GoT. I like knowing that the world the characters live in is not just there to forward the plot.
Not a fan of GoT, but I do enjoy the creativity and detail put into its world.
