After the talk Tyrion had with Dani about future rulers could he have perhaps promised Cersei that her unborn child could be heir? I could see him thinking that wouldn't really be a betrayal to Dani since he's still helping her take over the Iron Throne and I think it would be one deal that he would think Cersei might honour. How else could he be silly enough think she would stop her war? He has been shown as being very intelligent and while he was helping run the Iron Throne he was fully capable of coming up with devious plots and executing them.

Gilly didn't so much as find the info as much as she provided plot exposition for the audience by rereading out load a passage from a book Sam has already translated/transcribed. She also, by just feeding him facts he already knew from being forced to rewrite all those books, helped give him the push he needed to head back to the North.
