Spoilers for season 1-7 of Game of Thrones

With the HBO series Game of Thrones now rushing towards its conclusion completely separate from George R.R. Martin’s source material (A Song of Ice and Fire), the seventh season proved to be the most controversial one yet.

The season is perhaps most notable for bringing together fan favorites Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. While many have been waiting for this to happen, others felt that it was too contrived, rushed, and/or poorly written. But is this criticism justified? Is this storyline not getting the credit it deserves?

In this video I take a deeper look into these two characters, how their motivations inform their relationship with each other, and why exactly they fall in love. I will also explain why this romance was always meant to be, and what it could mean for the end game of the story.

  1. Excellent synopsis!! The pace of Jon and Dany's relationship was intentional because these two characters are unlike any other coupling in GOT; they are EQUALS. I like the fact that they didn't even let them hold hands until Ep 6. The viewership is used to seeing a couple lustfully "fall in love" in 3 episodes. But at this point both of these characters are so well developed/matured that if they fell helplessly in love in 2 episodes it would have been cliché. Instead, just as the characters have matured, the writers are hoping that viewership has also matured to the point where they can read subtle nuances between the lines.

  2. Like it or not, Daenerys and jon were fated to fall because Jon is the azor ahai and Daenerys is his nisa nisa. Jon has to plunge his sword into Daenerys heart in order to bring forth lightbringer and defeat the night king.

  3. people who don’t like them together are being foolish and just trying to be contrarian. it makes sense they have loads of chemistry and you’re just plain wrong if you try to fight against it

  4. Thank you for laying it out so thoughtfully. I was frustrated with fan reactions to the j/d storyline which to me was the strongest of the season precisely for the reasons you outline in the amazing video. And the background music made me tear up a bit not gonna lie.

  5. Great video and analysis. Long may they reign.

Makes me wonder if Rhaegar had killed Robert and claimed the iron throne from his father, would Jon and Daenerys have ended up together anyway? They would have been different people with easier lives. But the desire to keep the bloodlines pure wouldnt have disappeared altogether.

  6. Totally agree! Even GRRM reportedly kept telling people on the season 1ep1 set of GOT that this is all about Jon and Dani!!! D&D tried to write it as well as they could and it paid off quite well coz timelines were moving faster offsets. I'm not a book reader but I've been shipping these two since season 1ep1 of GOT! Thanks lmedias

  7. Great analysis. It's always good when someone can so thoughtfully explain what you see and understand yourself. And I just don't get the people that can't see Dany & Jon's chemistry – because I thought it was off the charts! Some of it subtle and some not so subtle.

  8. I still don't like it and believe they have no chemistry (not just lustful chemistry, mind you), but you did help me appreciate it more from a thematic context. Keep up the good work!
