Did the Night’s Watch Vow change because of the Night’s King, the 13th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch? Why does the vow refer to walls, plural?

A little theory here which suggests that yes, you could be right, the agents of He Who Must Not Be Named might indeed be working to preserve the world, not destroy it.
The idea that the red comet caused the Long Night by impacting meteors on Planetos seems more solid to me now than ever. But a tinfoil theory I'm only now picking up on is this: that it was the original Greenseers who brought the comet close enough to wreak havoc in the first place.
By attempting the mass extinction of the First Men, they almost destroyed the world. From out of the nuclear-winter wastes of the Long Night, the agents of The Great Other – a rebel Greenseer/so-called 13th Lord Commander and his ice-witch bride, if you will – tried to ensure this could never happen again. The Other's, their creations, in thrall to the Lord of Darkness, hunted down the children of the forest and the misguided magicians who had brought fire and dragons and death to the world (and all done in the name of Light!) and tried to extinguish their false flame forever.
From the POV of the Other's it's people like Bloodraven, Bran, the Valyrians and the Red Priests who are the true enemy of life. Their magic either derives from the psychicly charged red comet or is the reason for its appearance in the first place.
Treating the living as cannon fodder by killing them and reanimating the bodies seems a small price to pay to preserve the entire world. Such a grim and grisly method does of course feed into the propaganda of the agents of R'hllor. And it would inspire the living to acts they misguidedly consider to be brave and for the greater good, filling their heads with such foolish notions as banner waving, idealistic camaraderie and self sacrifice.
But all the while the true enemy is their own blind devotion to royal-house hierarchy, the old false gods and the belief that humans are the rightful masters of the world.
All praise to channel Lucifer Means Lightbringer for turning my tinfoil to the darkside with this one. Or maybe I'm missing the point and none of the above is what he means at all…
Excellent video. 👌
I always wondered if Sam or Jon tried to pass through that Weirwood door after breaking their vows, if it would let them pass. Because if it didn't, it would mean most likely there's some magical binding to speaking the vows after all. Or that that part of taking no wife and whatnot, is in fact not a part of the original vow at all.
kev, is your email still listed on here somewhere, lost it again. have an interesting thing to tell you.
I vow to….slay motherfuckers!
When I first came across this channel, I was like Bridge 4 is a weird name for a channel. I thought it was a play on words like Bridge For (insert whatever). But I just started reading The Way of Kings. Makes total sense now.
Presumably the Wall was not built all at once, It's possible that the NW was founded before the Wall was one continuous structure and there were many much smaller walls blocking the most vulnerable routes
I'm currently reading the first book & couldn't help notice that in the first encounter with The Others & the young knight that one of them dueled with, this young crow's description matched Jon Snow's to a tee. Most of the encounters/attacks with/by The Others were in direct correlation to Jon or a response to trespass. I think they knew who he was, either as a Stark or potentially as a Stark/ Targaryean. Didn't reports of sightings & encounters with WWs go up around the time of Jon's birth?
Something to keep in mind regarding R'hollar or The Lord of Light, is that is also the name for Lucifer in our world. Granted, he's become a complete archetype for evil in modern Christianity & is also known as The Lord of Lies. In more pagan traditions, he aligns with The Trickster archetype. There's no reason to believe the visions people are seeing in the flames are 100% accurate or interpreted accurately for that matter. We don't even know if R'hollar is a separate entity from The Dark One. He (?) could be maneuvering players on all sides into a final confrontation that benefits him. The ultimate Double Agent.
I think the only way humans will survive is by ridding the world of magic altogether. To do this they must destroy the weirwood forests.
Well, when you put it that way.. it's like they are laying it out in front of us, aren't they? Excellent observations. I agree with another commenter, you are the BOMB. So.. the veil between life & death? Is that what this is all about?
Yes, wallS, plural…The Five Forts were built to defend the living against the demons of the Lion of Night (long night – lost in translation)
Jamie is not evil? Since when
what if the night king, while still lord commander, falls in love with one of the children of the forest, who then turns him into the night king to fight his own people on her behalf.
Great video as always dude, you're definetly on my top 3 game of thrones channels!
Just to be a little picky though, The Night's King is someone else than the Night King 🙂 I believe you are talking about the Night King in this video 🙂
Very great video content as usual. Sorry I'm late replying, but really enjoyable subject and certainly gives you things to consider.
Thanks for uploading. 😎👍🏼
Just IMO but from the vow at the Night-fort this is what I got:I am the watcher on the walls, (The Wall, and The Five Black Forts?) I am the fire that burns against the cold (Fire Kills wights) the light that brings the dawn (on the surface guards against the long night that lasts forever, but pretty sure it's also a reference to Dawn the sword, and it lights on fire but it needs a willing blood sacrifice), the horn that wakes the sleepers, (that could mean the WW's or the ancient stark kings are buried in the crypts and bound with iron long-swords, I very much think they were guarding a servant of the great other but that escaped in A Feast for Crows so maybe and defensive force now?) I am the Shield that guards the realms of men." (Probably foreshadowing they are all going to die except Sam and Jon) Thanks for a great Video!
Awesome video that vow is a piece of a bigger puzzle and I can't wait till we have all the pieces because i know it's something deep why there back and also i wonder if all the children are dead they cant be does Lil mofos started this sh** it's not right if they're not there at the end
The "horn that wakes the giants, another reason you should do a video on the horn of winter or the horn that Euron uses in the kingsmoot in the books.
also Shareen picks up the horn that Samwel found while she's in the Lord commanders office it's a split second but she does touch the horn, faces her father. I guarantee you there's a third time somewhere that n the show we haven't seen it. it's on the cover of the next book it has MEANING I'll bet somebody maliciously sound of the horn to wake the white walkers or accidentally did it
I predict that when my Season 8 watch begins, I will take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I vow to view only the channels to which I subscribe, and so avoid all spoilers, giving no glory to those who spoil without honour.
Notifications shall be the shield that guards the realms of true fans, from the very first episode of Season 8, and all the episodes to come.
Until our watch is ended
I was glad that when Jon died he fulfilled his vows and is now free. It reminds me of the Bible and when Jesus comes back from the dead the old covenant is broken and we are now under the new covenant and are free indeed ♥
Yup, no other channel goes so in depth as you do. So vastly interesting. Thanks for the content!
I like this idea. You are real good at this stuff Bridge, keep it up
Awesome content as always man.
I might have a new idea for a theory:
Lord Commander Mormont was the 997th Lord Commander, making Jon 998th and Ed 999th. Do you think there will be a 1000th Lord Commander, the last one, and who will it be. I still feel like Jon would 'sacrifice' himself, but it might also be someone else. Perhaps Jaime, he who made fun of the Night's Watch, would lead it during it's final war. Or might it even be a White Walker, who doesn't want to follow the Night King. I doubt it though, doesn't seem like the direction the story is taking.
And I also have a non-universe question, what do you think the Spin-off would be? I'm kind of hoping Valyria or something with Dothraki. What I just thought of might be really cool as well. A spin-off set in the East during the (or one of the) Long Night(s).
I don't think the Others are evil, far from it. I think we'll come to see this in the end, there are two sides to every story and Gorge knows war is not black and white.
deep
good stuff, thanks Kev!
always more to think about with ASOIAF, it's the vow we take as readers:
"I am the reader of GRRM's books… My reading shall not end until A Dream of Spring is published…" 😀 (omg whatever, that's all I got…) 😛
It's my theory the original vows are for the watchman at Winter fell. After the queen was captured by Jorumen and the wall was built a new watch was created. This is the NW as we know it.
That was excellent.
I just started rereading the books again and was thinking about the Night's watch vows. 🙂 Great video!
I think you are too humble about the video's you make. You surely are one of the best, at least from the GOT/ASOIAF youtubers that make video's. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that way. You deserve more subscribers! I admire your modesty, it's a great quality. But I think you should listen to everybody when we say your video's are great! Because they are 😉
Great video Kev. I love this question. I think the vow has always been the longer version. A Game of Thrones – Jon VIII…. "The men who formed the Night's Watch knew that only their courage shielded the realm from the darkness to the north. They knew they must have no divided loyalties to weaken their resolve. So they vowed they would have no wives nor children."….
The first "New caveats" are the what a Black brother sacrifices and the second"Original caveats" are his duties. Duty and Sacrifice. The part of the vow that opens the gate at the nightfort is an answer to the question the gate asks..Who are you?
I think it's safe to say eith 100% accuracy that the White Walkers are NOT monsters. Just like all of GRRM's characters–they can be arseholes yet have redeeming qualities. We saw that the COTF victimized the men who became walkers. I'd be pissed off too. I'd cut heads off too. But I'd be cutting of COTFs' heads.
I wanted a great Usual Suspect twist at the end. But I'm not as creative as you and certainly cannot interpret the text like you (therefore cannot imagine what it is but I've always thought that Jon will have to go live with white walkers–can you do a video on that theory, would it fit into anything, or am I just nuts?lol) . Martin said everything we need to know is in the first book [is that right? anyone??]. If so, I need to get back into the book.
Your videos are awesome. I'm going to go binge after having listened to this one.
Missed you bridge. YT is lonely without your content!
Nobody can break this shit down like you. Do you realize that?
And I watch everybody. You, sir, are the BOMB.
How is this a Jon Snow theory?
Great video as always Kev, if you remember me from your vid last week I wanna say that I've got more into the show and books and have learnt a lot more and I'm thinking of making GoT videos. I just want to say thanks for being one of my main inspirations ^_^
Great Theory and great catch with the " wallS". Keep it up Kev!
Got the Kit 'Dolce Gabbana' ad before this lol
nice one
I don't know about these vows gonna change at the end . but one thing I know is Jon's gonna get everything he said he wouldn't.
"History is written by the 'winners'" and things get twisted as time goes by. Also, it reminds me how certain religious rules got added and created to help specific individuals and groups of people in general; then people forgot how things were before the addition/alteration, and just took the rules as facts that have always existed. Again, those in power write history and rules.
I always thought some of the oath was foreshadowing the complete end of the Night's Watch. Law painting a good guy as bad? No never hahaha! I also the horn as someone that wakes true evil and danger up. Now just the walkers man!
Notification squad???
