In a previous video I tried casting a blade shape with welding thermite. The idea worked but I had used a lousy mold and got a deformed result. Today I used the lost foam method and got much better results. I have a casting but it seems to have a very large crystal structure as cast. Hopefully I can do some normalizing in the forge and then see if the casting can be forged to shape. I will show the attempt at normalizing and forging in another video.

  1. For a multitude of reasons this is becoming my favourite YouTube channel. This deserves big views, not 500 but 500 million. If I were king I would force schools to show it at assembly and break time.

  2. Hello Bill Gillmour,
    Very interesting video.
1- From where did you get the Welding Thermite, and How much does it cost?
2- Is it possible to find a Thermite without the steel particles, for example, to use for Bronze Casting?
    Thanks.

  3. I wonder what would happen if you took styrofoam, melted it in styrofoam, and used that goop to make a mold for casting? Maybe roll it onto a mold using a fiberglass roller to even it out. I wish there was a material that could be used in a rotocasting machine, and later as a lost "fill in the blank" method for metal casting. That could be an interesting way to make hollow statues.
