This is why England's game, talk, and variety shows are better than the ones in the U.S. England's show's comedy is witty… and mean. The best comedy is mean-spirited. Among my friends, one of our mottoes is it's not really funny until somebody cries. To blow my own horn, on two occasions I've told jokes at friends' expenses, such that they literally punched me out of my barstool in anger. And, on both occasions, I lay on the ground, howling laughter up at them as they scowled at me, while trying to sort out a combination of sour, impotent rage, jealousy, and the need to break out laughing themselves.
