Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows on the planet, and it is because it is based on one of the finest works of fantasy, which is often ranked second to J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Now, Lord of the Rings already saw its day in the sun when it had its movies, plus the Hobbit series of movies which were prequels. As we know, everybody is trying to replicate Game of Thrones’ success on TV, and what better way to do that than by bringing back Lord of the Rings, but this time on TV? This is exactly what Amazon is planning on doing. Read on!
A new report by Deadline says that the Tolkien Estate, that handles the rights of all of his works, has been looking to sell off the television rights of Lord of the Rings, and that Amazon, Netflix and HBO had been approached, asking for $200 – $250 million, just for the rights, which is a hefty tag. On top of this, the budget for the show would come around to an estimated $100-$150 million a season. Apparently HBO has already passed on the offer because the finances are “insane”, while Amazon and Netflix are still in the game. Apparently the rights are limited, and won’t be inclusive of all the characters in the universe.
As we previously reported, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who is often the richest man on the planet, on his good days, wants Amazon to get a hit as big as Game of Thrones, and this seems like a deal that Amazon could afford. Many reports suggest that Bezos is personally involved in making this show happened, and it seems like it just might.
There is a good chance that the show will be produced in partnership with Warner Bros. TV, who developed the movies.
