In this video I ramble on about why I hunt with a crossbow almost exclusively–in both archery and rifle seasons, and even the late flintlock season here in PA. I also suggest whether YOU should do so. Just my two cents. I hope you enjoy it!
This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don’t discriminate–I’ll shoot any legal deer. 😉
I want to help make YouTube the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol’ Model ’94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80’s, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven’t looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting…
…and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The album for the current season is available wherever you download music online, and the Special Edition CD is available on Amazon.com.

What kind of video editing software do you use?
First as always, love the videos please keep them coming. If the surroundings permit I carry the crossbow. To start I usually have towait for the other deer bear the one I shot to leave as they are not spooked by the bow being fired. Secondly, my mechanicals leave a blood trail that is hard to compete with. I'm sure others experiences will vary etc. but this is what works for me. I also see the same in that my 14 year old daughter is much much more comfortable with the crossbow than a rifle.
Great videos. I've watched all of them and found them helpful as I was learning. I managed to get a crossbow this year because I got on a deer lease that is in a bow only county here in Texas. Well I got my first crossbow deer last weekend and what a different experience! She was quartering away at 20 yards and dropped on impact. Heart shot she never saw coming. Keep up the good work.
Thank's for another great video, just got to see it have been at deer camp. I think that hunting with a crossbow has made me a better hunter. Having to get close and pick my shots I have been able to spent a lot of time observing whitetail behavior, which has made me a much better rifle hunter, I am careful and slowed down and make good shots. So I don't agree with using different equipment diminishing from either, yes is does take a litter more time, but time I spend sighting in my rifle is the same time I would be shooting my crossbow to use in the rifle season, so it comes out in the wash. My daughter is 17 now. She has shot several deer now with her rifle, but she does not enjoy shooting her rifle like she enjoys shooting my cross bow. Its the bang. She loves to bow hunt with her compound now.Your doing the right thing not pushing your daughter, let her enjoy the cross or let her try a compound.
I hunt primarily with a crossbow but think it's good to be "multiple". Super windy days here on NEPA are brutal for us Arrow Flingers lol.
KooL video👍👍
Have you ever tried bowfishing ? I know that kits are made for crossbows it is a lot of fun and a unique experience.
Please! Make a test! Great Channel! Grande abraço! From Brazil!
That was dark and disturbing intro for such a friendly and personable guy. I love it! Keep up the creativity.
Hey Rich just thought I'd let you know that I am a person who has a record. After talking to a second amendment lawer, he apprised me of the fact that even though I passed a background check and bought weapons in 2009, was told they are illegal, and cannot possess or use them. This is due to the out of date laws in our great state. I have not had anything on my record since 2002. The last. These many years later I'm out of sorts, never a physical or threatening charge, or confrontation. I became a crossbow hunter. I love it.
Please keep up the good work. ( I am very urban hunter, 12 acres or much less, only got one so far but will get up to 3 more. Legally!) Greg
I was a former scout/sniper and love my rifles. I love my target shooting and always will. I have a huge lifetime collection of rifles and I am an avid reloader. In spite of this I love the crossbow and I am moving toward it as my primary means of whitetail hunting. It would take many hours to explain all the reasons why, but it is an answer to my prayers and one of the best things to happen to me in a long time! Does that mean I don't like my rifles anymore? Hell no! It adds to my hunting enjoyment!
Well I most prefer hunting with my bow, I have killed far more things such as turkeys with my bow, but since it is a rare chance if my short gun season that it is fun to change it up once in a while
Heading out to the woods with my 12ga and a handful of slugs. Because why not!
I am hunting with a crossbow this rifle season here in MD. I have deer inside of 20 yards all the time. My crossbow scope is a fixed 4 power and is a little much. Its fun and exciting getting in close to deer. Thank you for your videos they have helped me out a lot in making my decision on buying and hunting with crossbow.
Crossbow from beginning to end and occasionally I will muzzleloader just not a big fan I've gone hunting I feel like the deer don't have a chance with a gun
I sat out the rifle season this year. I already had my tiny freezer full from the buck that I shot crossbow hunting and was way too busy to fiddle with checking my zero on the rifle, and I just don't enjoy rifle hunting as much as I used to. I like the fact that when I take a deer with an arrow through the lungs there is practically no meat at all that gets ruined. I hear what you are saying about cost. To get set up I spent $200 for my CenterPoint Sniper 370 package, $60 for a dozen Bloodsport arrows, $45 for nine Muzzy broadheads, $75 for a rangefinder, $20 for tree steps, $60 for a safety harness, $60 for two lifelines and $20 for some ratcheting tie downs. All totaled I have $540 invested so far. I made my target out of a sturdy cardboard box stuffed with old rags and both of my tree stands are homemade. With the rocky ground I have I can pretty much expect to replace the blades on my broadhead every time I shoot an arrow out in the field. So far replacement blades are my only recurring cost. I also benefit from free landowner tags. I also invested in some game cameras, but I think I'd have bought them even if I wasn't hunting. I think I've reached the break even point on cost with the money I've saved on meat. Since then I'm actually seeing a payoff every time I harvest a deer. I would love to get a compound bow, but I'd need a lot more disposable income to justify the cost of setting that up.
Just my $0.02…even if you flinch, nothing can match the accuracy or deadliness of a rifle especially at longer distances 75 yds and beyond. It's a precision hunting weapon (as is a crossbow, IMO, from shorter distances 50 yds or less). I've also experienced a 90% drop-on-the-spot rate with deer when hunting with a rifle, they usually end up dead where you shoot em. Deer will almost always run when shot with an arrow. However, crossbows are much quieter and less likely to disrupt the game roaming within your land if you're hunting exclusively with an archery weapon. I agree though, do what you love, hunt with your weapon of choice, as long as it's legal…hunting success with a rifle is probably only marginally better compared to an archery weapon overall.
Amen on the 2nd Amendment. I have NEVER understood why any legal professional would not appreciate the importance of the 2nd amendment as you do, Rich. Nice Savage .270 btw. I have the Savage model 16 TH XP in .308 (stainless barrel) and have put over a dozen deer in the freezer with it. Great rifle, couldn't be happier with it.
Is it true that I can use my compound during the rifle season here in pa
♡
We have alot in common and we live relatively close by. I am a felon though I put down my old ways and I've found healthier ways for excitement. I am subscribed to your channel and since your an attorney I rely heavily on your advice. Could we get in touch ?
I primarily how with my crossbow through all the seasons but during the 7 day gun season I'll take the gun out a couple days
Might I suggest getting her the Excalibur GRZ2 it's a great one for small frame shooter
In Illinois we cannot use archery tags during firearms deer season. That's shotgun, slugs only, or muzzleloader, no rifles for deer hunting here.
Curious , did your buggy really burn up ?
I hunted crossbow first time this year, and i hunted with rifle during our rifle season. But i like shooting so have no problems spending time practicing. We don't have a black powder season where I hunt. But i do have a cap and ball rifle too.
Thank you for your help and info
I bow hunt most of my life , then my shoulder started giving me a fit , could not pull a bow back anymore at the age of 58 . I started back hunting with a gun , then my wife talked me into getting a crossbow , man do I love it . Thank you wife ! PS enjoy your program
I love Excalibur because they're made in my mothers home town of Waterloo also where my gun club is located
First of all, I have to say thank you very much for this channel I am a new crossbow owner; longtime fan of crossbows though. Although I am pretty decent with both handguns and shotguns I have always had trouble with rifles and rifle scopes, That being said after purchasing my Barnett Jackal I fell in love after the very first shot and find I am quite accurate using it. Now my question is Should I use different arrows if the manufacturer's arrow start to break after only a few shots into a target bag they seem quite shoddy in my book, of course, these were the arrows that came with that bow I am thinking that the arrows that come in the package are just crap starter arrows not meant to last very long in the first place what say you.?
missed you-glad you are back
Rich
Glad you did this because as you already know I'm a multi-season hunter! Just finished Connecticut shotgun season and still hunting with the crossbow. Unfortunately we're now hunting private land with the crossbow at the request of my hunting buddy who feels it's much safer on this property. However a couple other hunters who also have the owners permission are using rifles. Although we're seeing game we're not getting crossbow range opportunities. That said I love the crossbow and can't wait to get my first kill with my Jackal. However come January I'm off to Maryland for their special WMA cull shotgun only hunts. But regardless of you favorite weapon do get out and hunt.
👍🎯
I always laugh at he hunting orange laws when people hunt inside pop-up blinds…
Thank you for the info . I will try that and see
Hey hey! That's one of my favorite quotes, too. "Beware the man who shoots one gun…"
I hunt with a rifle in rifle season for the same reason I don't hunt with a pistol in rifle season; some day I'm going to see a huge buck at 150+ yards and I don't want to be limited to a pistol. I rarely see mature bucks around my place. When I do, I want him to die by my hand.
Excellent video! For me, Hurricane Harvey really hurt the deer population on my place (it took a direct hit as a Cat 2 with lots of flooding), so we are not taking any deer this year. However, the hogs did fine (go figure) so we have taken some hogs with rifles.
Good subject. I was wondering where you been? How is your season going? Are we going to get any kills on video soon? Anyways good to hear from you. Stay safe and Happy Holidays to you and yours🦌💯❄️🎄
Awesome Video Rich !!! Great video brother 🙂
Thankyou
Sorry but I'm new to hunting in Pennsylvania.. can I i hunt with a crossbow in Pennsylvania? In rifle season?
No.
Thanks for the video! I thought there might be something wrong with me only wanting to hunt with my crossbow in all the seasons – My friends/family who hunt, hunt with the seasons bow with archery, rifle for firearms and so on. Ever since I got my Excalibur crossbow I cant get enough hunting in with it! I small game hunt with it and of course hunt big game with mine as well. It has started to be a passion now of mine to hunt with it!
I cannot seem to sight in my scope. I am new to crossbow hunting and have tried a number of things that I’ve seen on YouTube yet to no avail. I am going hunting on the 10 th of December and would like too be able to have confidence in the fact that I will hit the animal thanks
I hunt only with my crossbow . I just enjoy it more the getting in close and I just use my archery gear I get more time in the field with my chosen weapon. In Oklahoma we can use archery gear from Oct 1 to Jan 23 . I used to use compound and long / recurve bows but back injuries but an end to that. Not that I seen any thing wrong with hunting with what ever weapon you choose .
I hunt it all crossbow shotgun muzzy!!! Can't hunt with a bow anymore. I like your posts and YouTube channel really!!
Your just a normal guy like me and we have texted back to each other!!
I recommend your channel about 59 times this this year! Keep it up!!
It's not about the size or points it's about getting out and enjoying nature!!! I'm 53 and handi Hunter as I call myself and only have so many seasons left!!! That's why I watch you channel it's just about FUN!!!
