After a long winter, spring is almost here. A few years ago, the arrival of March might have meant it was almost time for a new season of Game of Thrones, but while we will have to find other ways to entertain ourselves this April, the actors and producers of HBO’s hit show are hard at work on its final season.
For those of you wondering when Thrones will be finished filming, we now have an answer, thanks to a recent interview with Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) who tells us filming will wrap in June. Game of Thrones has been filming, with some starts and stops, since October of 2017, and while the cast and crew must be looking forward to the end, it’s also doubtless going to be a little bitter-sweet, as everyone says goodbye to a show some actors have been part of for almost a decade now. Headey claims the new season is “Bigger and better than ever!” We can’t wait.
Speaking of endings, Game of Thrones seems to have finished filming at the Moneyglass set in Ireland, which is the home of Winterfell, and moved on to concentrating on King’s Landing scenes. There are rumors going around that the massive Belfast set might not be torn down after the show ends, leaving it for fans to visit and HBO to use for future Game of Thrones projects. Regardless, Thrones stars have been trickling back into Belfast– the show’s main writers and headlining actors were spotted in a bar, and Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) apparently also made their way to the city which has become the hub of Game of Thrones operations.
Fans were also intrigued to learn that Lena Headey’s body-double, Rebecca Van Cleave, who stood in for her during Cersei’s infamous, nude walk of shame, is also back in Belfast (Cleave’s agency, Industry Casting confirmed her involvement in Game of Thrones with a tweet which has since been deleted). While Cleave could be doing other work for Thrones, people couldn’t help but speculate why Cersei might be taking her clothes off again this season– will the lovelorn Euron Greyjoy finally succeed in seducing the Queen?
Speaking of taking clothes off, or at least clothes, if you feel you just don’t have enough Game of Thrones T-shirts or other merchandise in your life, good news. HBO has recently partnered with the business ReedPOP to put out an entirely new line of Game of Thrones merchandise. The fan-site, Winter is Coming got some sneak peeks of the new Thrones offerings and they’re pretty nifty looking.
HBO continues to maintain a much tighter hold on the final season of Game of Thrones than it has had in past years– very little information on the plot has leaked to the public, and we remain, for the most part, in the dark about the final fate of Westeros. Hopefully the wait will be worth it!
