Game of Thrones star Lena Headey is on a mission to take down the stigma surrounding mental health, and instead get people talking about what they’re going through.
The 44-year-old has opened up about her post natal depression, and spoke about how she got help while venturing into motherhood.
She revealed that she suffered with mental health issues while filming Game Of Thrones.
Speaking on Running Wild with Bear Grylls, she said: ‘[Filming was] really horrendous – I was postnatally depressed but I didn’t know it. I saw a doctor for the medical check, and I just burst into tears. She said I was postnatally depressed and I went, “Am I? Why is that?”
‘I saw a great guy and he sorted me out, but I did the first year [on ‘Game of Thrones’] in that space, figuring out motherhood and going through a weird time personally. It was tricky.’
She added: ‘There are certain things that are cool to talk about, and there are certain things that no one wants to talk about. I just feel if you don’t share and you don’t connect, you’re just causing more isolation, and that’s a really bad thing for all of us. I’ve learnt just to sit with it, anything that feels uncomfortable.’
And Lena isn’t the only star urging people to speak up about their mental health battles, as Dwayne Johnson also encouraged men to talk.
The former wrestler addressed his decision to reflect on his mental health state, telling viewers that depression does not pick an chose its victims.
He said: ‘Depression doesn’t discriminate. And I thought that was an important part of the narrative. If I was going to share a little bit of my story of the past, it’s that regardless of who you are or what you do for a living or where you come from, it doesn’t discriminate.
‘We all go through it. If I could share a little bit of it with people and if I could help somebody, I’m happy to do it.’
