Longstanding Game Of Thrones actor Joe Dempsie has given us a few hints about the future of Gendry in season eight.

And one comment in particular has piqued our interest.

Speaking to fan site Watchers On The Wall, Demspie discussed what Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen would do if confronted with the bastard son of Robert Baratheon.

‘I don’t know – marry him?’ he replied, when asked about it.

It’s a bit unlikely – season seven’s finale saw Dany getting frisky with Jon Snow (they’re related!) – but Gendry is a Baratheon and uniting two warring houses would ensure peace and prosperity, something Westeros is in dire need of.

Of course, the fact that our favourite marathon rower is also the true heir to the Iron Throne might make Dany wary. After all, killing him would be a good way to strengthen her own ruling credentials.

Dempsie was probably joking too.

Producers on the HBO epic have taken secrecy to new levels for season eight, with scripts set to ‘self-destruct’ after filming. So it’s unlikely he knows the full plot.

But the 30-year-old actor has other ideas about the future of the series.

‘The thing about Dany that we’re seeing is her unpredictability now – you just never know what she’s going to do,’ he said.

‘What’s this quest for further power doing to her? Sometimes I don’t even know what she would do. She would just as likely marry Gendry as burn him alive.’

As for his own character’s journey in the new episodes? Dempise reckons we’re going to be seeing a lot more of the skinhead blacksmith in this season.

‘He’s sort of been a slow burner, hasn’t he?’ admitted Dempsie. ‘For the first few seasons, I was getting itchy feet for more of a purpose for him, because he was mostly just serving as a foil for Arya. But even with those scenes, there are little nuggets that are dropped that are quite subtle.

‘As the years go on, his potential significance [has become] more and more apparent, and potential is an important word. There’s a lot of elements of his character and his parentage that make him potentially powerful or dangerous, and he’s constantly learning more about himself.’
