Tourism Ireland has to be among the more ambitious ad agencies working today. To promote season 7, they commissioned a gorgeous, 80-meter long Bayeux-style tapestry with discrete panels depicting key scenes from every single episode of the show. The jaw-dropping end result currently hangs in the Ulster Museum in Belfast. If you’re ever in the area, it’s well worth a visit.
Now, FFT.ie reports that the agency is being justly rewarded for its efforts. On top of winning a Webby Award for Best Social Community Building and Engagement (that one’s voted on by the public at large, FYI), it won big at the Creative Circle Awards, which are given out by the oldest advertising awards body in the UK. There, it home gold awards for Outdoor Special Build, Best Illustration and Best Art Direction, and a bronze award for Best Experiential Craft. (Yes, apparently the Creative Circle Awards treats advertising prizes like Olympic medals, and who are we to say they’re wrong?)
Finally, Tourism Ireland took home a graphite award for Art Direction at the D&AD (Design & Art Direction) awards. Tourism Ireland Head of Marketing Communications Brian Twomey was jazzed. “Tourism Ireland has been working hard to build awareness of Northern Ireland around the world, highlighting our connection with Game of Thrones to fans everywhere,” he said. “So, we are really proud that our tapestry campaign has been recognised at the Creative Circle Awards and D&AD awards in London and at the Webby Awards in New York.”
This isn’t the first time Tourism Ireland has impressed with an inventive, striking ad campaign. IN 2016, it took wood from trees felled by storms along Northern Ireland’s Dark Hedges, a Game of Thrones filming location, and fashioned them into a serious of 10 beautiful doors, each modeled after different episodes of Game of Thrones season 6:
What will Tourism Ireland have in store for the final season of the show? Something spectacular, we have no doubt.
