Game of Thrones’ Euron Greyjoy is never going to survive the course of season eight, let’s face it, but one fan has made a very strong case for how the monster will meet his grisly end and we are all for it.
Fans of the books have been desperately waiting for the day they will see George R.R. Martin’s vision of a kraken brought to the small screen, and at this point there is only one plausible excuse for HBO to go there.
For those of you not so familiar with the Songs of Ice and Fire, kraken are mythical giant squid that terrorise the seas of Westeros and are just as epic as they sound.
So, why wouldn’t David Benioff and D.B. Weiss not seize the opportunity to have a massive mollusc take centre stage in their final chapter? With an endless budget for a CGI sea monster, they almost certainly will.
After watching the animated video of The Prophecies of the Known World, narrated by Sam Tarley, modestly named Reddit user big_pecs has suggested the beast will come roaring out of the sea to attack either Jon Snow or Euron Greyjoy – although, they debunk The King of The North encountering a kraken immediately, because why would he?
They wrote: ‘At about 0:30, Sam tells us that an iron born priest had seen visions of krakens pulling Aegon’s ships into the deep, but it never happened. Maybe it didn’t happen to Aegon the conqueror, but didn’t we recently learn Jon’s true name was Aegon?
‘If Jon ever travels to the iron islands by boat during season 8, we could see a kraken attack, (or it might be another Euron attack).
‘The biggest flaw to this theory is, why the hell would Jon bother going to the iron islands? Unless the white walkers take over the entirety of Westeros and it’s the last place to make a stand, I don’t see any good reason for anybody going to that useless waste of space.’
However, a much more frightening prediction, which we are absolutely not ready for at all, is that the hero to perish at the hands of a kraken will be one of Daenerys’ dragons as beast takes on beast.
Troiswallofhair responded: ‘The priest King Lodos was from the Iron Islands, but his “kraken visions” could have occurred anywhere. Lodos simply saw krakens attacking Aegon’s fleet. A few seasons ago Varys said that krakens were spotted off The Fingers, exactly where Jon and Dany are headed.
‘For the record, I’ve long believed that the dragons will die in a similar fashion to their namesake. This means that Rhaegal will die in a one-on-one battle with an enemy and possibly end up in water. A kraken makes perfect sense.’
Eitherway, we’ve got months until we see any of the remaining action unfold with new reports now claiming season eight has been delayed again, while fans of the beloved fantasy epic have already patiently waiting a year since season seven drew to a close.
Thankfully, we were given a three second teaser which saw Sansa Stark reuniting with Jon Snow, with many fans speculating that she’s glaring at Danerys Taragryen in the background.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO in 2019.
