Who will sit on the Iron Throne? That’s the question flowing through the entirety of Game of Thrones, but drawing closer to the end it’s looking more likely that the answer will be no one.
Season eight has already promised the largest battle ever played out on the small screen, and with that oath no doubt comes plenty of bloodshed.
We’ve been told we’ll need therapy; it will be devastating and that fans will be divided. What would be more divisive than if everyone who died so far lost their lives in vein and they just got rid of the Iron Throne altogether?
Jon Snow is the firm favourite to end the HBO epic as ruler of the Seven Kingdoms come the summer of 2019, but a fan on Reddit has predicted that the Bastard of Winterferll is more likely to destroy the Iron Throne than ever take his seat on it.
Basically, the throne was built by Aeon Targaryen by melting down the swords of his enemies with dragon fire. So, destroying the Iron Throne takes dragon fire.
Enter Jon and Mother of Dragons, Daenerys, who currently boast two dragons, while The Night King – another likely candidate to abolish the seat – is also flying high with one.
The end of the throne would be the ultimate bridge between the Seven Kingdoms, which we can easily imagine was George R.R. Martin’s vision all along.
Although, before we get ahead of ourselves, there’s also the matter of who will actually still be standing when the time comes and right now we don’t hold much hope for anyone.
But according to genuine scientific research, there is one simple rule which ensures who will live and die in the fantasy epic and, basically, you should start mourning Daenerys now.
Game of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic and HBO on April 2019.
