We now know the principle cast members for HBO’s still-untitled Game of Thrones prequel series. Naomi Watts is the biggest name in the cast, but a diverse pool of talent is also on board, including actors like Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower and Ivanno Jeremiah. But if the prequel is going to be anything like Game of Thrones, it will have a vast ensemble vast that goes well beyond the leads. With that in mind, fansite Watchers on the Wall brings us news of a couple more characters being cast for the show’s pilot, which is set to shoot this spring.
HBO learned over a decade of making Game of Thrones not to get too detailed with its character descriptions lest it give something away, so we don’t have much to go on. Per Watchers, HBO is looking to cast two characters known only as “L2” and “W2.“ These parts will be played by confident young black actors aged 6-10, so we’re talking about kids here. That’s consistent with the prequels push to have a more diverse cast, and it fits in with the original show’s penchant for spotlighting younger actors who then grow into stars; it’s hard to remember now, but Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Isaac Hempstead Wright were all just kids when they started filming Game of Thrones.
HBO is also looking for “a very strong actress” aged 26-33 to play a character codenamed “F2.” This character is a young white woman.
We’re not likely to see the first episode of this new show until 2020 at the earlier, but we’re very curious to see how HBO will follow up the biggest show in its history.
