Could a fan favourite turn into a bad guy? (Pictures: HBO)

Game Of Thrones fan theorists can come up with some sick, twisted plots that even George RR Martin himself would say ‘too far’ about – but this latest one might just take the cake.

Or hold the door, even.

A keen Redditor has come up with an even more heartbreaking finale for fan favourite Hodor, theorising that he could make a return to Westeros – only as a White Walker, and not as a friend.

Hodor was seen devoted to the bitter end as he carried the paralysed Bran Stark on his back on their journey through the Seven Kingdoms, only for it to be revealed he had been trying to warn people of his death from the start.

As a child, he was shown a vision of his future thanks to The Raven, and had seen himself desperately holding a door closed to keep away White Walkers as Bran made his getaway.

But one sneaky Reddit user has noticed something that can’t be entirely ignored – seeing as Samwell Tarly warned that ‘only fire’ could stop the White Walkers.

So basically…not a door.

After never seeing Hodor’s dead body, you can never be entirely certain what is going on in this endlessly violent fantasy land, but it does leave the door open for a possible return.

However, after being met by an army of White Walkers, chances are he’s one of them now, and will face the Starks in battle as the show heads towards its finale.

We don’t even want to think about Hodor as the bad guy in any of this, especially Bran’s face if this turns out to be true and his former bestie has now turned against him.

But we should know better than to have someone have a hero’s exit on this series.

Not long to wait now until we finally get the answers we crave and we can stop coming up with theories on the internet.

Game of Thrones returns 17 April on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
