George RR Martin is not revealing a date for his upcoming book (Picture: Rex)

Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has ruled out revealing dates of when fans can expect the next book in the series, and for good reason too.

The 70-year-old A Song Of Fire And Ice creator, on which the HBO franchise is based, says he’s not going to bother psyching us up for the release of the next novel because he never sticks to it.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, George explained: ‘I have no date. I’ve given up on giving dates because I give one and then I miss it and everybody gets mad.

‘It’ll be done when it’s done.’

He added: ‘It’s been going very well lately so, knock wood.’

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones kicked off on Sunday with the cast getting emotional about saying goodbye, but George doesn’t think it’s the right time to end it.

‘I don’t think it should be the final season. But here we are,’ he said at the series premiere in New York last week.

‘It seems to me we just started last week. Has it been longer than that? The time has passed by in a blur. But it’s exciting.

‘I know it’s an end, but it’s not much of an end for me. I’m still deep in writing the books.

‘We saw five other sequel shows in development. I think I’m going to be hanging around Westeros while everyone else has left.’

Game Of Thrones continues on HBO and Sky Atlantic next Sunday. Seasons one to seven are available to stream on NOW TV.
