Some questions have been raised over how much fans will get to see of the Game of Thrones prequel after it was reported that it may only get one episode.

The spin-off series is currently in production but the option of a full series is in the hands of HBO bosses.

The channel has yet to officially confirm the name of the prequel but author George R.R. Martin seemed to suggest last year that it would be called The Long Night.

Various other details about the show have been revealed, including various cast members as well as the main plotline for the series.

Here is everything that we know about the prequel so far, and whether it will actually happen.

Is the Game of Thrones prequel still happening?

The first prequel to Game of Thrones is currently being produced, but it doesn’t mean that fans can expect to see a full season of the show.

HBO is cautious about releasing a new show based on the popular franchise, especially if it fails to live up to the hype of the original series.

We do know that at least one episode will be produced, and it has a strong cast and solid production team, which suggests that the channel is hopeful and willing to put full support behind a spin-off to their most popular show ever.

Speaking to Deadline, HBO boss Bob Greenblatt said: ‘There’s a prequel in production, but just a pilot so that we can see if it has all the goods and is worthy of going forward.’

What do we know about the Game of Thrones prequel?

In a press release from HBO the channel confirmed various details about the upcoming prequel including some of the cast and the general premise of the show.

Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts is set to be one of the lead actors in the series, alongside Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie and Denise Gough.

They are also set to be joined by Miranda Richardson, John Simm and John Heffernan, who all became recent additions to the cast.

It will be set thousands of years before Game of Thrones and will document Westeros following the Age of Heroes.

This will include the true origins of the White Walkers, as well as the various mysteries and legends that exist in the land.

If fans were worried about how closely it will be connected to the original books, George R.R. Martin is being credited as one of the creators of the new series, along with Jane Goldman who will also be acting as the showrunner.

SJ Clarkson, who worked on The Defender and Jessica Jones for Netflix, will be directing the pilot episode.
