Spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4 below.

Game of Thrones season eight, episode four delivered several devastating blows; we lost Nathalie Emmanuel’s Missandei and another dragon was shot out of the sky, but Jon Snow’s treatment of his loyal direwolf, Ghost, hit us hard too.

Don’t even get us started on the rogue coffee cup.

Now the episode’s director, David Nutter has revealed that CGI difficulties are the reason Ghost never got a measly pet let alone a hug goodbye.

‘Since the direwolves are kind of CG creations, we felt it best to keep it as simple as possible,’ Nutter told Huff Post.

‘And I think that it played out much more powerfully that way.’

Wow. Rude.

Fans were rightly appalled when Kit Harington’s Jon sent Ghost north in episode four and didn’t even say goodbye after he was such a good boy in the Battle of Winterfell.

The reaction has been huge, with legions of fans decrying Jon’s cold treatment of the beloved pet.

Twitter exploded with Ghost memes (Picture: Twitter)

One fan tweeted: ‘Ghost lost a ear in the battle and Jon couldn’t even pet him goodbye, wtf is that?! #gameofthrones.’

While another added: ‘my only GoT commentary for the night is that i cried over ghost and jon’s goodbye and jon couldn’t even like, pet him, so i’m chill w jon dying now.’

fans aren’t buying it (Picture: HBO/Twitter)

They’re not buying Nutter’s CGI reason either as a fan pointed out: ‘Bro they ride DRAGONS in this show.’

Another popular tweet reads: ‘“We couldn’t have Jon pet Ghost cuz we blew our CGI budget on the blood spraying out of Rheagal’s throat. And Starbucks.”’

Nutter added: ‘Keeping Ghost off to the side, I thought that played out better.

‘Then he just walks off by himself, he turns to Ghost and has this moment with Ghost that I thought was very, very powerful.’

We couldn’t disagree more.

Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5 airs on Sunday and Monday on HBO, Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
