Game of Thrones is finally coming to an end after eight years of war, drama and death in the world of Westeros.

Many of our favourite characters have already left the series after being killed off earlier in the series, and now only a few remain to fight over the Iron Throne.

Over one million people have signed a petition for the final season to be remade with different writers.

If you’re wondering why the series is coming to an end, then here is everything that you need to know.

Why is Game of Thrones ending?

The main answer is that the story has naturally come to an end and reached the point where George RR Martin intends to end the novels.

The deaths of the Night King and Cersei ends two of the major story arcs in the series, and many key characters have now been killed off on the show.

Many fans have said that the end of the show could have been extended by at least another season to allow more character development and a more fleshed out ending to the series.

Season seven only ran for seven episodes, making it shorter than the 10-episode run of the previous six seasons, while season eight has had only six episodes.

This was a conscious decision by the writers who felt that they only needed a shroter season to wrap up the story, but this has been met with backlash from a portion of the fans.

A Song of ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has two more books planned for the series – The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

Will there be another Game of Thrones TV show?

Filming of a Game of Thrones spin-off is currently underway, according to reports.

The series is being produced again by HBO and is a prequel set several thousands of years before the event of Game of Thrones.

Currently the name of the series is Bloodmoon, but this hasn’t been confirmed by HBO and could change at a later date.

The cast for the new series includes Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, John Simm and Miranda Richardson.

HBO’s summary of the series says it ‘chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

‘From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.’
