One of the most surprising aspects of the Game of Thrones series finale, “The Iron Throne,” were the lords and ladies of Westeros electing Bran Stark as their king, the start of a new Westerosi tradition. Will he be a good king? The jury’s out on that, but he was definitely a surprising king.
Or at least, surprising to most people. There are those who saw it coming, including Gwendoline Christie (Brienne), who shared her theory with Mario Lopez, of all people, before the season 7 premiere back in 2017:
I’m not 100% sure what Christie is trying to say when she starts talking about how the story may not be told in chronological order, but she’s on the money about Bran being a left-field candidate for king. She can hold this video up always as an example of her prophetic abilities, and for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau not being willing to open his mind to the truth. I like to think that when the pair of them got the scripts for season 8, she came into his dressing room and mocked him for it.
And honestly, Christie wasn’t the only one on this trail. In Vegas, Bran was also the odds-on favorite to rule the Seven Kingdoms leading up to the series finale, although that was probably due to spoilers leaking by that time. More impressive is that nearly a year before that, Vegas was still giving Bran excellent odds, even though there was nothing at the time to suggest that he would ascend the throne…or what’s left of it. Must have been something in the air.
