Game of Thrones fans zeroed in on Conleth Hill’s less-than-pleased reaction during a read-through of his character Lord Varys’ death.
A clip of him during the reading forms part of a documentary about the show, called The Last Watch, and it aired on HBO on Sunday.
Fans of the show couldn’t help but notice the 54-year-old actor’s disgruntled appearance as he read the very last lines of the Lord of Whisperers.
As viewers will know, Varys met his end in Dracarys’ fire after Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) told Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) that Varys had betrayed her by trying to get Jon Snow, AKA Aegon Targaryen positioned on the Iron Throne instead.
In the video clip, some of our most beloved actors sit around the table following a reading of the script.
‘I told you what would happen if you betray me,’ Emilia Clarke reads her lines, to which Conleth responds with, ‘You did.’
As Emilia reads the lines that would burn Lord Varys, Conleth folds the script in half, puts it down. leans back and crosses his arms. Lena Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister, starts laughing quietly as a narrator reads out how Varys is burned to death, and Emilia throws Conleth a sympathetic glance.
Fans of the show quickly noticed the actor’s annoyance, and they shared in it. ‘#ConlethHill is an amazing actor and #Varys deserved character development,’ one disgruntled fan wrote.
‘It is a character that should have had more weight on the series. Just saying I understand his reaction to the reading of the script, they wrote him off as if he were a complication.’
‘Varys’ reaction is exactly how the entire GoT universe felt….not impressed at all,’ another added, whilst there was also this observation: ‘Varys is p****d.’
There were lots of people who said his reaction ‘pretty much sums it up,’ no doubt referring to the entirety of season eight.
Hill has made no secret of being frustrated to have been kept out of major storylines from the past few seasons of the show.
Season eight episode five, titled The Bells, saw Varys killed by Daenerys Targaryen (who later goes on to slaughter thousands of innocents at King’s Landing).
Talking about his death-by-dragon-fire execution, he admitted that he took it to heart.
‘I took it very personally,’ he told Entertainment Weekly.
‘I took it as a person, not as an actor or an artist. I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in the same position a lot more than I did at the time.
‘You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about.’
He went on: ‘It was kind of frustrating. As a whole it’s been overwhelmingly positive and brilliant but I suppose the last couple of seasons weren’t my favourite. It just felt like after season six, I kind of dropped off the edge.’
Fans of the show are angry with a whole host of issues they believed tainted the final season of the show, including characterisation, pacing and plot, and a petition to have a do-over of season eight got over one million signatures.
