Spoilers ahead for Game Of Thrones, obvs.
Turns out that Cersei’s prophecy – ‘when you play the game of thrones you either win or you die’ – wasn’t exactly accurate, as quite a lot of the players made it through to the end of the show alive and well.
But even the characters we thought had made it home and dry might not have been gifted with the end we saw in the final episode of the eighth season.
We’re of course talking about Grey Worm, who we thought had happily sailed off to Naath with the Unsullied to spend time in the country his true love Missandei was born in.
While the island is advertised as a sunny, peaceful place famous for its wine, Naath is also home to a rather devastating plague known as butterfly fever that attacks and kills any invader who is brave enough to visit.
Anyone unlucky enough to contract the disease starts to experience spasms and pains which make them ‘dance’, until they begin to sweat blood and their skin peels off.
No wonder they didn’t put that in the travel guide.
But Missandei had all her skin and never danced, I hear you say. That’s because the people of Naath cannot fall to the fever’s effects, having developed an immunity from living on the island for hundreds of years.
It’s called science.
Any Grey Worm fans who are devastated by the news he may have perished without his skin, take solace in the face that the disease was never even mentioned in the TV version of Game Of Thrones so it may be resigned to the books.
Missandei even invited her boyfriend over to Naath to meet the fam in the second episode of season two.
‘When the war is over and she has won, do you want to grow old in this place? Is there nothing else you want to do, nothing else you want to see?’ Grey Worm asks her before she gets her head lopped off by Cersei.
‘I’d like to see the beaches again,’ she replies, hopefully.
Either Missandei didn’t care about the fact her boyfriend would sweat blood while they were sunbathing, or he very much wasn’t invited.
Looks like Game Of Thrones’ Romeo and Juliet weren’t as tight as we once thought.
