I’ve been saying for several years now that Dark Souls creator FromSoftware was working on something related to Game Of Thrones. Just last year, right before E3 2018, I included that in a prediction piece.
We didn’t get an announcement last year, but it looks like we’ll get one this weekend at Microsoft’s pre-E3 presser. A major leak from Bandai Namco includes the reveal of Elden Ring, a new game directed by FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki in collaboration with George R.R. Martin.
Here’s the leaked press release via Gematsu:
“Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware, Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., is a fantasy action-RPG adventure set within a world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki—creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series; and George R.R. Martin—author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Danger and discovery lurk around every corner in FromSoftware’s largest game to-date.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, President and Game Director of FromSoftware Inc. known for directing critically-acclaimed games in beloved franchises including Armored Core, Dark Souls, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
George R.R. Martin is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of many novels, including the acclaimed series A Song of Ice and Fire – A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast For Crows, and A Dance with Dragons. As a writer-producer, he has worked on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and pilots that were never made.”
We don’t know much else beyond this at the moment, but we’ll know plenty more after Microsoft’s press conference tomorrow at 1pm PT. (See all the conference times here).
I suspect it will be an action-RPG in the vein of Dark Souls, Bloodborne and the other FromSoft games, but with a more robust story thanks to Martin’s involvement. I also suspect it will be more open-world than From’s other games, but I could be wrong on that front. I just want a game about knights with From’s excellent combat mechanics and world-building. Toss in some jousting and mounted combat and I’ll be a happy man, indeed.
Either way, this is incredibly exciting. It’s like the universe somehow conspired to take my favorite fantasy author and my favorite video game maker and mash them together just for me. I couldn’t imagine a better pairing. It’s kind of hard to believe this is really happening. I can’t wait to learn more.
