Game of Thrones fans have known about Samwell Tarly’s (played by John Bradley) desire to become a Maester since season one.
Maesters are highly-intelligent officials in Westeros who act as consultants and guides to the royals and government of the country.
They can specialise in one or many different subjects – from healing to history – but each has their place in the world.
Maesters are renowned for devoting their lives to study, and ensuring they know all there is to know about their chosen subject.
This vow often leaves Maesters studying for years and years to ensure they are the best fit for the job.
So then it was a little confusing for viewers when Samwell arrived at the small council in one of the final scenes of the series as a Maester.
Sam has certainly spent a lot of time working on his knowledge and expertise to gain a head start in becoming a true Maester, however it looks as if he skipped a lot of the study requirements.
Recently the season eight, episode six script was posted online by the Emmys, which revealed a few hidden details about the final episode.
One of these details explained Samwell’s newly found Maestership, and what it was earned in.
As Samwell walks into the small council the script reads: “Samwell only has one maester’s link for healing.”

While in the show Samwell is wearing an entire chain, it is then revealed only one of the links is for his job – and for healing.
Samwell most likely received this healing link because of his efforts in healing the Greyscale that plagued Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) back in season six.
Fans spoke out about this on Reddit, with one writing: “At least he didn’t randomly earn a full chain. Still don’t understand how a one link novice becomes Grand Maester but oh well.”
Another said: “Shouldn’t he have one for Raven handling at least? Oh well, guess he forgot about his time at the wall. He surely forgot all about oaths.”
Meanwhile, fans of the show have been working hard and flipping through the earlier episodes to find some hidden facts in the series.
One was pointed out by some viewers about Jon Snow (Kit Harington), regarding what would happen to him.
Reddit-user TheDaysKing recently posted a breakdown of the Night’s Watch oath, and how it laid out Jon’s life to come.
One of the lines read: “I shall wear no crowns and win no glory,” which is exactly what he attempted to avoid all his life.
Another said: “I shall live and die at my post,” which he certainly did, as he lived through some rough attacks from the White Walkers, but was also killed by his men.
The final piece of the oath wrote: “It shall not end until my death,” which fans can assume it did, after he rejoined the organisation at the end of season eight.
