Game of Thrones duo Gwendoline Christie and Alfie Allen have revealed their reasons behind submitting themselves for Emmy Award consideration.

After eight seasons of ferocious fantasy entertainment, the two stars clearly felt confident enough to self-nominate this year, with both their characters Brienne of Tarth and Theon Greyjoy consistent favourites amongst the Thrones faithful.

And although HBO didn’t support their awards chances following the final season, Gwendoline and Alfie’s work seems to have paid off.

Speaking to IndieWire about his Emmy motivations, the Theon actor recalled: “I think HBO submitted me way earlier on in season 1 or season 3 as the character’s journey developed more and more, but I think there’s just so many main characters in Thrones that if HBO were to kind of play that game of submitting everybody diplomatically, it would be really tough.

“I think my team and I just felt it was the right time to submit, and hopefully HBO will reimburse me the $225.”

Meanwhile, Gwendoline told The Hollywood Reporter that it was “useful” to take that step in submitting herself.

“I just wanted the possibility of the opportunity [to be nominated],” she added. “I remember talking about it with my team and saying, ‘I feel like I just want to do it for me, for the character.’ And I said to them, ‘Don’t worry about me being disappointed. I genuinely do not expect it to amount to anything.'”

It just goes to show… a little self-belief goes a long way.

Game of Thrones aired on HBO in the US, and you can also catch up on the show via Hulu. Viewers in the UK can catch up via Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
