Game of Thrones‘ almost-Big Bad, the Night King, is quite the imposing figure.

He’s got the pale skin and piercing blue eyes of the other White Walkers, but looks more physically striking and is decked in more armour. It’s still quite a minimal look, but it serves to make him a very frightening figure.

That was not always the plan for the character, though. Concept art from production designers Deborah Riley and Jody Revenson’s The Art of Game of Thrones book, which will be released on November 14, has been doing the rounds online which shows what the character could have looked like. Check it out below.

In the sketch, the Night King looks a lot more regal than he eventually turned out, which is probably for the best, as a heavy crown and long robes aren’t really practical for fighting.

Plus, he also looks quite like the ghostly forms of the Nazgûl/Ringwraiths from The Lord of the Rings, with a dash of the King of the Dead thrown in as well, and you don’t want those comparisons for your nearly-main baddie.

Recently, Game of Thrones‘ showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss announced that they were no longer working on a Star Wars trilogy of movies, for better or worse.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray now.
