There’s a massive Melisandre plot hole staring you in the face (Picture: HBO)

Game of Thrones fans may have ended now, but that hasn’t stopped its fans poring over the series and calling out plot holes now that the story has finished.

The latest bug-bear concerns the Red Priestess Melisandre, and her whereabouts between the ending of season seven and her reappearance during season eight.

Taking to Reddit (of course, where else), fans pointed out that the character (played by Dutch actress Carice Van Houten) leaves Westeros in the seventh series, stating that she has business in Volantis. However, when she appears back in the fold during the final run of the show, she doesn’t mention her trip or what happened in the far-off city.

‘She kinda [sic] forgot why she went there,’ a user commented on the site.

Another fan, however, had a more constructive thought about Melisandre’s brief disappearance, and what it meant for the biggest battle in the show.

‘My takeway is that she needed to go back and get the necessary super powers for The Long Night,’ one fan theorised.

In the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, Volantis is one of the Free Cities, located to the east of Westeros. We only visited the city briefly in Thrones – during the fifth season of the show, where Tyrion Lannister is kidnapped by Sir Jorah whilst he’s travelling with Varys to meet Daenerys Targaryen for the first time.

Another eagle-eyed fan, with a clear knowledge of George RR Martin’s world, shared a very convincing theory about what exactly the Red Woman got up to in Volantis.

‘The main Temple of the Lord of Light is in Volantis along with the high priest of their order. One could assume she went back to confer with him on all she’s learned, learned some higher magic then returned leveled up for the final battle.’

As we know, Melisandre did indeed help to save Westeros from the White Walkers, wandering out into the wilderness and turning to dust when her destiny had been fulfilled.

Recently revealed concept art for Thrones also revealed the chilling original design for the original White Walker and Big Bad of the series, The Night King, who Melisandre also helped to defeat when she inspired everyone’s favourite assassin Arya Stark to get the job done.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to stream via NOW TV.
