The Game of Thrones coffee cup mystery rages on. Turns out we still can’t sleep easy because Conleth Hill has shut down all suggestions the disaster was on his hands and we still have no culprit.

Among the many criticisms to come from Game of Thrones season eight was the infamous shot of Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) sat beside a coffee cup which clearly didn’t come from a local chain in Westeros.

The coffee in question was supplied by a local Belfast café, even though Starbucks ended up making millions in free advertising because that’s the cruel world we live in.

Then, earlier this month, Emilia finally appeared to clear up who was responsible for the blunder, putting the blame on Lord Varys star Conleth.

‘We had a party before the Emmys recently and Conleth, who plays Varys, who’s sitting next to me in that scene, he pulls me aside and he’s like, “Emilia, I have got to tell you something, love. The coffee cup was mine.”’ She told Jimmy Fallon during his talk show.

But he’s having none of it.

‘I would need to have had Mr Man arms to leave a coffee cup there,’ the actor stressed during Sunday Brunch. ‘I took a bullet for Emilia Clarke and she touted on me.’

He added: ‘You know, there’s no proof that I did it. So accuse away!

‘I’m just not making any comments until I have a lawyer … It definitely wasn’t product placement!’

In the final episode, a rouge bottle of water was spotted behind Conleth’s leg. But by that point, it wouldn’t have been too much of a shocker to see McDonald’s golden arches torn down by one of Daenerys’ dragons in King’s Landing.

Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
