Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were buzzing to learn they are both descended from Irish royalty.

For their two-part special DNA Journey, the presenters discover where they came from by tracing their family histories.

Other than finding out they’re distant cousins, they were also told that their DNA can be traced back over 900 years to Irish kings.

Ant declared that he was loving the ‘Game Of Thrones stuff’, but his joy was short-lived as it turned out Dec’s ancestor was actually a ‘high king’, and so more powerful than Ant’s descendant.

Everything’s a competition with those two!

On the second part of DNA Journey, which aired on Monday night, Ant is told that the McPartlins are a group within the Irish McGovern clan dating back to the 12th century and a man called Samhradhan, Baron of Tully Hall.

Their family friend Alistair, a historian, added that his ancestors can also be traced back another 500 years ‘right to the edge of history.’

Ant said: ‘That’s what I want. This is what I want. Game Of Thrones age. We wants lots of that kind of conflict and castles.’

Teasing his co-star, he went on: ‘I’m royalty. Stick that in your porridge. Have that. That’s fascinating.

‘From knowing nothing when I came into this, to going back to the edge of history.

‘So technically I’ve won. I’ve won the Game Of Thrones. Not just Ant versus Dec, I’ve won the Game Of Thrones.’

However, Dec later learned he is DNA can be traced back to a ‘high king’.

‘So we’re both descended from royalty. You think I’d be jealous but I’m pleased, we’re at the same level,’ Ant said.

‘I was king for a day. Had to be brought down a peg or two!’

The first part of the special saw the long time presenting partners open up about Ant’s battle with addiction over the past year and how it impacted their friendship.

Ant and Dec’s DNA Journey is available to watch on ITV Hub.
