Millions of Game of Thrones fans were let down by the fact that author George R.R. Martin’s last novel wouldn’t be finished in time to drive the story for season eight of the show, but he’s been busy. Although the last books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series aren’t complete, Martin is sharing his love for literature through a new business venture. It may be worth a trip if you’re interested.
George R.R. Martin opened his own store
The
Associated Press reports that last month, the writer/producer opened up a
bookshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Called Beastly Books, it sits next to Jean
Cocteau Cinema, the theater that Martin purchased and renovated in 2013 to show
films and host author events.
He opened it on November 30 and the store carries titles by Martin as well as many other writers who have provided autographed copies of their books. According to the author’s blog, Beastly Books has a large selection from favorites such as:
“James S.A. Corey, Leonard Maltin, Janis Ian, Diana Gabaldon, Walter Jon Williams (his QUILLIFER books are terrific), Melinda Snodgrass, Lee Child, Anne Perry, Carrie Vaughn, David Levine, John Scalzi, Joe Lansdale, Mary Robinette Kowal, Connie Willis, Marlon James, and many many many more.”
If you can’t make the trip all the way to Sante Fe, the shop
does fulfill mail orders. Game of Thrones merchandise and books are on hand
and customers can also browse the displays, such as a statue of the Iron Giant.
Martin has his plate full with projects
Vanity
Fair reported that in addition to working on Game of Thrones
spinoffs, Martin is collaborating with FromSoftware on a fantasy video game
called “Elden Fire.” He’s also serving as one of the executive producers for
the Hulu adaptation of Wild Cards, an anthology book series he edited. Multiple
branches of that series are due to spread into a new universe for Hulu.
He is also set to produce the small screen adaptation of writer Nnedi Okorafor’s 2010 sci-fi novel, Who Fears Death. Per Marie Claire, both writers will co-executive produce the show which will follow the story of a woman named Onyesonwu, whose world is filled with adversity, sorcery, and strength.
“Onyesonwu is an unapologetic, fully-rounded character—she is loyal and loving, but also brash and impulsive. She’s a real person with flaws and virtues that women can relate to, who has extraordinary abilities to affect change as she moves through the world,” said Okorafor.
There is one ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff show coming
After news spread that the first GOT spinoff was being
scrapped, fans wondered what would come next. There is something! HBO has also
picked up 10 episodes of House of the Dragon, an upcoming series based
on Martin’s Fire & Blood series. According
to Martin, the show has a showrunner and scriptwriter, and includes writers
who have worked on The Watchmen and Colony. If all goes well, multiple
seasons of the show are planned.
There’s no official word on when these new shows will arrive on their respective platforms, but at least book lovers can buy works from Beastly Books in the meantime.
