Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season two spoilers follow.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts‘s producers have opened up to Digital Spy about the animated series’ influences.

The Netflix series most obviously takes inspiration from The Wizard of Oz with its story of young Kipo journeying with her friends Wolf, Mandu, Benson and Dave through the land of the mutes to find her father.

Yet, co-showrunners Bill Wolkoff and Radford Sechrist revealed that The Walking Dead, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Game of Thrones were just as influential as Oz for Kipo.

“I was very inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones,” Sechrist explained to us. “Jamack going from evil to good was definitely inspired by Game of Thrones. The fun positive character of Kipo was inspired by Ang from Airbender, and the post-apocalyptic travel style was inspired by The Walking Dead.”

Wolkoff chimed in: “After I was brought on, I shared a few big influences rattling in my head with Rad, to build off of his foundations. And I’m a child of the ’80s, so some of mine go back. The after-hours of Walter Hill’s The Warriors helped us understand the shape, borders, and warlord rules of Las Vistas.

“George Miller’s Mad Max series was a reminder to always boost the fantasy of our apocalypse, like dragonfly-powered muscle cars. Time Bandits, Repo Man, and the HG2G books were benchmarks for me to push the absurdity as far as humanly possible.”
