Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Eternals – and he could have a bigger role than we first thought.
Back in August 2019, it was confirmed that Harington would be playing Dane Whitman, the only non-Eternal main character (that we know of, so far).
In the comics, Whitman’s connection to the Eternals is his relationship with Sersi (Gemma Chan), something confirmed to be in the movie as there have been on-set photos of Harington and Chan’s characters cosying up.
Whitman is no ordinary human though, as most comic fans expect him to become the superhero Black Knight. It’s because of that connection that Harington could end up playing more than one role in The Eternals.
In the comics, Whitman isn’t the only person to have held the mantle of Black Knight, with the first being Sir Percy of Scandia who wielded the Ebony Blade, made by Merlin.
Since then, there have been various versions of Black Knight, including the villainous Nathan Garrett who was rejected by the magical sword and Sir Eobar of Garrington who was the Black Knight in the Crusades.
Whitman is the nephew of Garrett and he was asked by his uncle to redeem the Black Knight name, so it’s unlikely that he’ll be a villain in the movie.
But as ScreenRant notes, the long legacy of the Black Knight and the fact that we know The Eternals is likely to span thousands of years, it opens up the possibility for Harington to play other versions of the Black Knight, including Whitman’s villainous uncle.
Perhaps an ancestor of Whitman looks so similar to him to allow for Harington to have the dual role, or as in the comics, Whitman could inhabit Sir Eobar’s body (which happened when he was turned to stone by Amora, long story).
We know from Harington that at some point, he’ll be wielding the Black Knight’s sword, so this could be back in the past or in the present day: “I’m trying to choose things as far away from Jon Snow as possible, but I’m playing a superhero and he’s got a sword.”
One thing that would go against this theory is that in the comics, the Black Knight’s history doesn’t have any connection to the Eternals.
So unless the movie wanted to have separate sections with Black Knight during history, it would have to find a way to blend the Eternals’ history with the superhero’s, without moving away from the comic book lore too much.
But it wouldn’t be the first time that the MCU has playfully adapted the source material to tell a fresh story (hello, the Mandarin).
