Emilia Clarke has repeatedly denounced sexism in the entertainment industry. The actress has returned to speak about her experience in « Game of Thrones », criticizing macho attitudes on the set of the series, specifically the double standards that she observed regarding the wardrobe choices for the female characters and some privileges they had the actors versus the actresses.
« The guys from the Night’s Watch Jon Snow wear a woolly mammoth all the time, » explained Clarke during their stint at the Edinburgh TV Festival. « When we were filming things in a hot country and they were wearing all those clothes, they had a pump with its own small generator connected to the locker room, » he said, explaining that the contraption was used to « pump cold water into pipes and cool them, so that underneath they had a cooling system. «Â
However, the interpreter pointed out that actresses « were not allowed that. » « All I could get was to have the back of my wig lifted, » Clarke continued. « It’s too difficult, I’m wearing a wig, they don’t make cold compresses, you have to put ice on yourself, » he said.
It seems that Clarke is not the only one who was unhappy with the costumes, as Nathalie Emmanuel also experienced an unpleasant incident due to the attire of her character, Missandei. « In my first season my wardrobe left a lot of things in view and there was an incident with an extra who made a comment about it on set, » he revealed in an interview with the British edition of Vogue. « Emilia immediately supported me, » he admitted.
« Game of Thrones » concluded in May 2019 after eight seasons. HBO will keep alive the universe created by George R.R. Martin with a spin-off titled House of the Dragon that will take place 300 years before the events of the main series and will tell the story of the House of Targaryen.
