“The Three-Body Problem”
“Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are taking another stab at genre television in their much-anticipated return to the small screen. The writing duo and Alexander Woo are teaming up at Netflix for the drama series “The Three-Body Problem,” based on the award-winning Chinese book series by Liu Cixin. The series order will reportedly cover all three books in the trilogy—“The Three-Body Problem,” “The Dark Forest,” and “Death’s End”—which tell the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. Rian Johnson, Brad Pitt, and Rosamund Pike will executive produce the series, and both author Liu and sci-fi writer Ken Liu, the English translator of the series, will serve as consulting producers. Keep an eye out for casting announcements as pre-production continues.
“Dear Evan Hansen”
The upcoming feature adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen” continues to expand its all-star leading cast. Now, in the final lead role to be filled, Julianne Moore has joined the film in the role of Heidi Hansen, the eponymous character’s mother. Moore is just the latest name to be added to the fast-growing cast, which as of recently includes Amy Adams, Danny Pino, Amandla Stenberg, Colton Ryan, and Nik Dodani, as well as all-but-confirmed leads Ben Platt and Kaitlyn Dever. Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for the stage musical, wrote the script and Stephen Chbosky is directing. Telsey + Company is the casting team.
“65”
From “Star Wars” to a new sci-fi project: Adam Driver has joined the cast of Sony’s upcoming sci-fi thriller “65.” Plot details for the original story are being kept under wraps, but “A Quiet Place” team Scott Beck and Bryan Woods will write and direct, as well as produce under their new Beck/Woods banner (along with Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi of Raimi Productions). With Driver’s busy upcoming slate, including Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel” and “Gucci,” it is unknown when “65” will go into production, but be sure to watch out for casting news from casting director Nancy Nayor.
“They Cloned Tyrone”
Driver is not the only busy “Star Wars” alum. First reported by Deadline, Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris will join John Boyega in the upcoming Netflix-Macro sci-fi feature film “They Cloned Tyrone.” Juel Taylor (“Creed II”) will mark his directorial debut with the project he penned with Tony Rettenmaier. The plot reportedly follows a series of eerie events that force an unlikely trio (Boyega, Foxx, and Parris) onto the trail of a government conspiracy. There’s no word yet on the production timeline for the project, but Boyega was cast back in 2019— now that the other two lead roles have been named, expect to see pre-production pick up. Kim Coleman is casting the film.
“Women in the Castle”
“Star Wars” star Daisy Ridley has also landed her next big project. Ridley, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Nina Hoss will star in the upcoming adaptation of the 2017 bestseller “Women in the Castle.” Written by Jessica Shattuck, the story tells of three German widows of conspirators involved in an assassination attempt on Hitler. Jane Anderson (“The Wife”) will adapt the story for the big screen. Filming is set to begin in early 2021 in Eastern Europe.
“The Brutalist”
An impressive ensemble has been assembled for Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist.” Joel Edgerton, Marion Cotillard, Mark Rylance, Sebastian Stan, and Vanessa Kirby will star in the period drama, which will be written by Corbet and his partner Mona Fastvold. The project will chronicle 30 years in the life of architect László Toth (Edgerton) and his wife Erzsébet (Cotillard) who flee post-war Europe to rebuild their legacy, only to have their lives changed forever by a mysterious and wealthy client (Rylance). Also in the ensemble will be Isaach De Bankolé, Alessandro Nivola, Raffey Cassidy, and Stacy Martin. Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2021 in Poland.
