Who is Elyes Gabel?
Elyes Cherif Gabel was born on 8 May 1983, in Westminster, London, England, and is an actor, best known for playing the role of Dothraki Rakharo during the first and second seasons of the HBO television series “Game of Thrones”. He also played Dr. Gupreet “Guppy” Sandhu in the medical drama “Casualty” which aired on BBC, and has starred in numerous other shows throughout his career.

Elyes is of very mixed Irish, Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, French, Algerian and Anglo-Indian descent. While he was born in Westminster, his family moved to Canada and lived there for some time, before returning to the UK and living in Bristol before settling in Manchester, where he studied St. Damian’s Roman Catholic Science College.
After matriculating from high school, he enrolled at Strodes College and began training his acting skills there, also training at the Northern Kids Theatre Company and the Oldham Theatre Workshop. He didn’t complete his college education, dropping out to become a part of the children’s television show entitled “I Love Mummy”, which ran for a season of 26 episodes; it focuses on a family moving into their dead grandmother’s house and discovering a sarcophagus inside. He then started appearing in various stage productions, including “Diary of Anne Frank”, “West Side Story”, and “Oliver!”
Casualty and Rise to Fame
In 2004, Gabel was cast in the show “Casualty”, the longest running emergency medical drama series in the world based in the fictional Holby City Hospital, and focusing on the activities of the Accident and Emergency Department – his performance gained him a nomination for Best Newcomer during the 2005 National Television Awards. He stayed with the show for the next three years, before leaving to focus on new acting projects. He also wanted to start a music career, desiring to have more time to record with his band.
His next project would be the drama “Apparitions”, playing trainee priest “Vimel” in the series which follows a priest played by Martin Shaw who performs exorcisms. Afterwards, he worked on the horror series “Dead Set” appearing as a zombie in the story which follows a zombie outbreak while on the set of another television show “Big Brother”, which has the cast members and production team trying to survive the undead. In 2009, he starred as teacher of phys ed Rob Cleaver in the show “Waterloo Road”, beginning his appearances during the fourth season.
Recent Projects and Game of Thrones
After Elyes’ work in “Waterloo Road”, he starred in the drama “Identity” playing the identity unit member DC Jose Rodriguez, in the show focusing on cases that involved identity theft. His next project was the Showtime series “The Borgias” in which he played Prince Djem of the Ottoman Empire, set during the turn of the 16th century and following the Borgia family. In 2011, he was cast in the second series of “Psychoville”, and was then cast in one of his most notable roles, as the Dothraki Bloodrider Rakharo in the series “Game of Thrones”, an adaptation of the fantasy novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R. R. Martin.
In 2013, he starred in the third season of “Body of Proof” before appearing in the film “World War Z”, which is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks. The following year, he was cast in the Christopher Nolan film “Interstellar”, and one of his latest projects is the show “Scorpion”, in which he starred as real life of businessman and information technologist Walter O’Brien in four seasons and 93 episodes.

Personal Life and Social Media
For his personal life, it is known that Gabel was in a relationship with “Scorpion” co-star Katharine McPhee – the two were first seen together kissing in 2014 and soon confirmed their relationship, but split in 2016. However, the two were later seen together in various social media posts leading to speculation that they are back together, including at Paramount Studios and even spending Elyes 34th birthday together in 2017. Despite that, the two have not publicly confirmed that they are back together.
Similar to numerous actors, Elyes is active online through accounts on various social media websites; on Instagram he posts pictures of his day-to-day endeavor, including pictures of himself with his friends and his family, particularly his mom whom he is very close to. His Twitter account is not very active, but he posts content from time to time, mainly updates in line with his Instagram account, but sometimes it takes months before he posts anything new, due to his busy work schedule.
