Game of Thrones star says show “wasn’t always collaborative”

Game of Thrones star Joe Dempsie has opened up about his time on the hit HBO series, explaining that working on it “wasn’t always the most collaborative” experience.

The Adult Material and Skins actor famously played Gendry on the series, appearing for the first three seasons before sitting out until season seven.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about the series coming to an end last year, Dempsie admitted that he felt a “mix of emotions” due to the fact he hadn’t been as much a regular on the show as many of his co-stars.

“I didn’t necessarily think that I would be one of the people who was in floods of tears on my last day,” he said.

“I guess because I had those three seasons out in the middle of the show, it felt like I’d already got used to life without it when the call came back that they wanted me to come back for seasons 7 and 8.

“It hadn’t defined my life for that decade as it has for so many of the others. But I found that I was actually really quite sad. It had been a big chapter in everyone’s lives.

“I was sad to say goodbye,” Dempsie added, explaining that Game of Thrones “was one of the best things I’ve done in [his] life, and probably one of the best things [he] ever will”.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences. But at the same time, I’m looking forward to moving onto new projects where maybe you get to do a bit more in-depth character work, and maybe have a little more responsibility.”

He added: “I think that Game of Thrones is such an amazing thing to be a part of. When you’re there, you’re very aware of your position within it, and you’re aware that you are there to serve a much, much wider story. And as a result of that, it wasn’t always the most collaborative.

“And I love working with people. I love feeling like I have a creative stake in something. And that’s what I’ve always loved about British drama, and I’ve been so lucky to have been a part of so many great, smaller British dramas over the years.”

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
