It feels like an eternity ago that we were sitting on the edge of our seat waiting for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones to air on HBO. Now, almost two years later (yes, you read that correctly), we’re finally getting a first look at the show’s prequel, House of the Dragon.
Based on George R. R. Martin’s first Targaryen history book, Fire & Blood: 300 Years Before a Game of Thrones, the series will take place 300 years before Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke’s story. Last September, Martin confirmed there will be dragons (which totally makes sense given the name) in the new series and by the looks of the show’s latest tweet, he wasn’t kidding.
The post, which was shared on Thursday, features two photos of a red dragon (a main character perhaps?) alongside the caption, “Dragons are coming. HouseoftheDragon begins production in 2021.” Oh, how we missed these fire breathers.
“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement last year. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”
So, while it seems like we have a long way to go before we’ll get to see the prequel on HBO (at least a year, if we had to guess), we’re happy to have some confirmation that the ball is rolling.
With all of the craziness and confusion of this year, we’ll take all the good news we can get.
