HBO’s chief content officer has given an update on the state of play regarding further Game of Thrones spin-off shows.
Following the conclusion of the main series in 2019, there have been various reports of numerous shows set in the world of Westeros in the works, though at present only one is definitely on the horizon – House of the Dragon.
Speaking to TVLine about whether there was any news on more spin-offs, Bloys admitted there is “no guarantee” that more will get greenlit.

“I’m not motivated here by any sort of, ‘We need three Game of Thrones spinoffs,'” he admitted. “To state the obvious, we’ve got one Game of Thrones show greenlit, and that’s House of the Dragon. And we’re really excited about that.
“There are other ones in development. We will greenlight something when we feel like something is exciting and well done and tells a story that we care about. It’s like any development,” Bloys added.
“So there’s no guarantee that anything’s going to go… [We’re] not trying to fill a schedule with a new prequel every year or anything like that. It’s just based on what stories we’re excited about telling.”

He went on to admit that, in the end, there is a possibility that the original series and House of the Dragon could end up being the only Thrones TV shows.
“This is not specific to Game of Thrones,” Bloys noted. “Typically speaking, we don’t put something on just to try to fill a slot. We’re trying to fulfil what we think is the HBO brand promise, which is quality shows that feel interesting [and] different.
“But we’re not doing it just to fill a slot. And that wouldn’t change for Game of Thrones, either. That said, there’s development that we’re certainly excited by.”
Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. Spin-off House of the Dragon will premiere in 2022.
