Over the past several years, Disney has been sucking in film properties like a black hole sucks in light. While monopolies are a rightfully scary thing, one plus is that we’ve gotten lots of new shows and movies in beloved universes, like Star Wars and Marvel. It’s not much of a stretch to say that without Disney buying Marvel Studios in 2009, we may never have gotten the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it.
However, there are some causes for concern, especially with more adult properties, since Disney has a reputation for being a pretty family-friendly company. Nowhere is this quandary more prominent than with Deadpool, the merc with a mouth and an on-again-off-again member of the X-Men. When the first Deadpool movie came out under 20th Century Fox in 2016, it made waves for its R-rating and self-referential style, which paid homage to the comics by frequently breaking the fourth wall. The sequel Deadpool 2 continued that trend, to the point where Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) even referred to the film’s villain Cable as “Thanos,” since he was played by MCU alum Josh Brolin.
Now that 20th Century is a part of Disney and it’s been confirmed that we’ll be getting a Deadpool 3 as part of the MCU, it’s reasonable to wonder if Mickey Mouse might stick out his gloved hand and curb Deadpool’s more outrageous tendencies. Thankfully, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
Next Deadpool movie won’t be “Disney-fied”
Deadpool 3 will see the original film’s screenwriting duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return after taking the second movie off, with Ryan Reynolds’ frequent collaborator Shawn Levy stepping into the directing chair. In a recent interview with The Playlist, Reese said that Deadpool 3 has been “proceeding as if its [rated] R.”
“Marvel’s been incredibly supportive,” Reese said. “They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It’s not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, ‘You know, that’s too far.’ That could happen, but to this point, it’s been nothing but support.”
It’s been nothing but, ‘how can we help you?’ ‘What from our universe would you like to use? How, how can we make your life easy?’ And we’re gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool. We’re not… this is not going to be the Disney-fied ‘Deadpool.’ So they’re awesome, and now it’s up to us to come through and justify that faith.
Deadpool 3 will be the first R-rated film in the MCU, so despite the support from Marvel Studios, many fans are still uneasy that the merc with a mouth might be forced to tone it down for this latest adventure. However, when asked directly whether Deadpool 3 was going to be able to keep its R-rating, Reese didn’t bat an eye.
“Oh, absolutely. They’re not gonna mess with the tone,” he said. “I mean, I’d never say never, I guess there’s an outside chance, but we’ve always been told it can be R-[rated], and we’re proceeding as if it’s R. We would like it to be R, we always have, so I don’t think that’ll change.”
Consider us reassured.
No release date is currently set for Deadpool 3, though it is expected to begin filming sometime this year.
