It’s been about 24 years since The Mask of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas, was released. And we all know what that means, right? Reboot/remake time! Nostalgia is a hot commodity these days, and Zorro is on the market.
But if they were to remake The Mask of Zorro, who would play the masked man? I mean, it could be Antonio Banderas. After all, Harrison Ford is donning the Indiana Jones hat once again at the age of 80, so what’s stopping the 62-year-old Banderas?
While this is all a hypothetical conversation, Banderas has chimed in on who he would like to continue the Zorro legacy.
Antonio Banderas has someone in mind to be the next Zorro
Speaking to ComicBook.com, Banderas revealed that he’d like his Uncharted costar Tom Holland to don the mask. “[H]e’s so energetic and fun, and he’s got this spark, too. Why not?”
I mean, yeah, why not?!
We know Holland can handle all the acrobatics needed to play Zorro. I’m just not sure if he’s got the personality for it, but he can probably pull it off with some practice and guidance from Banderas.
But if Holland (or anyone else) played Zorro for a new generation, would Banderas want to be around to pass the baton? “Yes, I would. I would consider that possibility. Why not?” Banderas said. “I think during today’s interviews I said something like that to somebody… I said that if they call it Zorro, I will do what Anthony Hopkins did in the first movie and so give the torch to somebody else.”
Currently, Disney+ is working on a Zorro series with Wilmer Valderrama, although that’s not necessarily a continuation of the Antonio Banderas movies. There’s also a CW Zorro show with a gender-swapped version of the character in the works.
So, while we wait for someone to take action on Antonio Banderas’ idea, we can catch him in Indiana Jones 5 alongside Harrison Ford next year.
