It has been five years since we saw the magnetic duo of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman together on screen as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. No one associated with the show ever really confirmed that season 5 of Sherlock was the last, which has kept fans hoping that the Baker Street Boys might return for one last mystery. If left up to showrunner Steven Moffat, fans would have their wish fulfilled as early as possible.
In an interview with Deadline, Moffat said he was ready to “start writing tomorrow” if the leads agree to return. “They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, ‘please come back?’”
Both Cumberbatch and Freeman have their hands full with multiple projects, including roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cumberbatch especially is busy playing Doctor Strange, whose role is important to the Multiverse Saga that’s currently unfolding. Meanwhile, Freeman will return as Everett K. Ross in the upcoming MCU TV show Secret Invasion.
If Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are available, more Sherlock could happen
Beyond that, many believe that Sherlock has run its course and that bringing it back will only compromise it. Moreover, season 4 of the BBC series, despite criticism, was more or less successful in giving Sherlock a proper ending with no loose threads left hanging. Creating a fifth season would mean opening it up all over again.
Still, neither the producers nor the stars have ever ruled out the possibility. In March 2021, Cumberbatch told Collider that his slate was “pretty, pretty full” at the moment that and other key actors were busy as well, but he would consider returning if the script was right. He also hinted that he would be interested in a movie rather than a show or spinoff.
