Game of Thrones has been one of the most popular shows of all time, and one that has redefined television. As such, it makes sense that HBO is not ready to let go of it. While we’re already in the middle of a Game of Thrones prequel show, House of the Dragon, it’s one of the many prequels HBO considered, and now it’s considering one more. A Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros is being discussed at HBO, according to Variety.

Variety says that the project is in very early stages, and there are no writers onboard as of yet. However, HBO is keen on getting this one out. Apparently, this prequel could have a film attached to it, with the film coming in first, leading into the potential series. Nothing is set in stone yet, though.

Canceled Aegon I prequel seems to be back on track

The project seems to be the same one that was canceled last minute according to a THR report from 2022. It could be that this is a new attempt at the same storyline, or a revival of the last project which was reportedly cancelled. THR’s report had said that writers Rand Ravich and Far Shariat (The Astronaut’s Wife) were attached to the prequel last. The script showed Aegon as a “drunken lout,” which may or may not be the case with this new attempt at it.

Variety has a synopsis on the project:

The show would tell the story of how Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westeros with the exception of Dorne. In doing so, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty. Those events took place approximately 300 years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones.”

This is HBO’s latest Game ofThrones spinoff attempt, with multiple projects in the pipeline, with many of them scraped. The Bloodmoon prequel was scraped post the filming of the pilot episode with Naomi Watts, while some others were axed more recently. If this one makes it out into proper development, we could potentially see more of the events that led to the events of Game of Thrones.
