Fast X star Vin Diesel recently shared some insight into plans for upcoming Fast & Furious spinoff projects, but it doesn’t sound like anything is happening soon.
Fast X premiered in theaters on May 19, 2023. The film is the first part of the two-part Fast & Furious finale before the franchise expands. Fast X: Part Two premieres sometime in 2025.
Vin Diesel has plans for a female-led Fast & Furious spinoff
Speaking with Variety’s Marc Malkin at the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party, Diesel said that he’s been developing the spinoffs for several years, but it’s just a matter of finishing the original films’ story before those get rolling. “I started developing the female spinoff…in 2017 with other spinoffs, and the sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs.”
Fast X is the first of a two-part ending, but it’s bittersweet to think of a finale. Look how many characters and great talent there is in the movie. There was no way I can pull that off unless I had everyone on for five seconds. These characters are appealing and we need to see more of them.
There have been 11 Fast and Furious movies so far. Of those films, only one is a spinoff: Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. The film was released in theaters in 2019.
While Diesel didn’t give as much detail on the spinoffs as we’d like, there are rumors of another Hobbs and Shaw movie in the works, along with a spinoff about Cipher, played by Charlize Theron. Nothing has been confirmed so far.
As of May 2023, the only upcoming Fast & Furious confirmed to be on the way is Fast X: Part Two. Beyond that, nothing is solid, but Fast & Furious fans can rest easy knowing Diesel and Co. have big plans for all of these great characters.
