Apart from revealing a new trailer for the Game of Thrones mobile game, the 2024 Game Awards showcased the anticipated spin-off Elden Ring: Nightreign. Surprisingly, author George R.R. Martin had no role in this project. Martin famously wrote the lore for the game developed by the Japanese studio, FromSoftware.
Unlike the base game, Nightreign creates a standalone narrative separate from Martin’s earlier contributions. This announcement stirred excitement as FromSoftware confirmed its bold direction for the spin-off. Fans can anticipate a fresh perspective in the Elden Ring universe with new lore to explore.
Elden Ring Nightreign won’t involve George R.R. Martin
Elden Ring: Nightreign was announced at The Game Awards 2024 and it is set to release in 2025 as a spin-off of the base game. The game’s story will be a standalone narrative but will coexist with Elden Ring’s main storyline. Developer FromSoftware confirmed that George R.R. Martin had no involvement in the project. This decision aligns with their approach to creating a “completely separate branch” of the Elden Ring universe.
FromSoftware previously stated that Elden Ring 2 was not in development, but spin-off games were possible. The announcement of Nightreign surprised fans, as most details were kept secret. Discussions in the fandom had speculated about a potential multiplayer feature. Game director Junya Ishizaki later confirmed Nightreign will include multiplayer elements, continuing the series’ tradition of intense gameplay.
George R.R. Martin’s role in Elden Ring
George R.R. Martin contributed to Elden Ring’s original world-building, focusing on the lore and events preceding the main game. However, Martin did not have direct involvement in the development of Nightreign or the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. FromSoftware decided to build a new story branch without encroaching on the base game’s narrative or fans’ emotional connections to it.
Despite his absence from recent projects, Martin remains connected to the Elden Ring universe. He previously commented on a possible live-action adaptation of the game, which he may oversee. This approach mirrors his role in guiding House of the Dragon. His work on Elden Ring has been praised for its impact on the game’s depth and creativity.

Hidetaka Miyazaki’s comments on Martin’s involvement
Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki praised George R.R. Martin’s contributions, highlighting the value his world-building brought to the original game. Miyazaki stated that Martin’s work inspired FromSoftware’s team creatively and enhanced the overall depth of the game’s universe. While Nightreign and other expansions were developed without Martin, Miyazaki expressed openness to future collaborations with him.
In interviews, Miyazaki shared interest in partnering with other professionals for new projects. He welcomed the possibility of working with Martin again, either on a future Elden Ring title or a different endeavor.
