Ryan Condal’s bold promise
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Condal opened up about the massive naval and aerial battle that will kick off season 3. He compared it to one of the most iconic battles in cinematic history, saying:
“To try to tell this story without doing the Gullet would be trying to film Lord of the Rings without doing the Battle of Helm’s Deep. If we were gonna do it, we had to do it right. And that meant dragons and ships and multiple theaters of conflict.”

Condal revealed that bringing this epic confrontation to screen was a four-year quest and one of the most complex sequences ever attempted for television.
What makes the Battle of the Gullet so massive?
The Battle of the Gullet is one of the bloodiest and most significant events in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. It features a huge naval clash between the Velaryon fleet and the forces of the Greens, multiple dragon battles in the sky and several simultaneous theaters of war.
Even some of the photos from this specific battle were released by HBO and Entertainment Weekly, where fans can see various characters in the setting of this war.
According to Condal, the season 3 premiere episode will dive straight into this all-out war without any slow buildup, delivering non-stop action from the very beginning. This massive sequence is expected to raise the bar for visual effects, scale, and intensity in the series. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the Battle of the Gullet, and Condal’s comments suggest HBO has gone all-in to make it a defining moment of the entire House of the Dragon saga.
