Dexter Sol Ansell, aka Egg from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has shared the heartfelt and challenging experience of filming one of the season’s most emotional scenes. He spoke about this in a conversation with Gold Derby.
Quick read:
- Dexter Sol Ansell shot the “get up ser” scene with a tennis ball
- He imagined the ball to be Peter dying
- He calls Peter a “special” person in his life
The heart-wrenching “get up” scene
During the Trial of Seven, there’s a point where Dunk is miserably failing against Aerion and isn’t able to defend himself. At that time, Egg desperately tries to wake up the injured or fallen Dunk. Since Peter Claffey wasn’t always available on set for every take, Dexter revealed that he had to deliver the powerful moment acting opposite a simple tennis ball as a stand-in. Dexter opened up about how he made the scene feel real:
“I was talking to a tennis ball… That was really hard to act… I pictured Peter there. He’s so special to me, and I actually thought, ‘He’s about to die.’”
The young actor revealed it was one of the hardest scenes for him to film because of the emotional intensity required. He had to imagine his on-screen mentor and friend in a life-threatening situation, which made the performance deeply authentic and moving.

Building real chemistry
This behind-the-scenes story highlights the strong bond between Dexter Sol Ansell and Peter Claffey. Their on-screen chemistry as Dunk and Egg has been one of the biggest strengths of the series, and moments like this show how much care and imagination went into creating that connection.
Even though he was performing opposite a tennis ball, Dexter’s ability to visualize Peter’s character in danger helped him deliver a raw and emotional performance that fans are sure to feel when watching.
