In a new interview with Variety, Collett described Jace’s attitude toward Rhaenyra with a mix of humour and honesty:
“He’s just being a grumpy teenager, really. He just thinks his mother’s wrong, and that she’s fallen into these traps right in front of his eyes, and he thinks he’s the best man in the room, but he is just a kid. But, yeah, he was born to be a leader, so he’s always going to have that trait.”

Jace’s growing frustration
This comment suggests that Season 3 will explore a more strained mother-son dynamic. While Jace has always been loyal to Rhaenyra, he is now at an age where he feels ready to step up as a leader and he’s starting to question some of her decisions.
He has always struggled with his legitimacy, and now at this age, it fuels him even more. Collett’s description paints Jace as someone who is confident, perhaps even arrogant, but still immature.
The “grumpy teenager” line adds a relatable and human touch to the character, showing that even in the middle of a brutal civil war, Jace is dealing with typical coming-of-age struggles, amplified by his royal status and the heavy expectations placed on him.
Born to lead
Despite his youth and occasional overconfidence, Collett emphasized that leadership is in Jace’s DNA:
“He was born to be a leader, so he’s always going to have that trait.”
This hints that Jacaerys will take on more responsibility in Season 3, especially as the war escalates with events like the Battle of the Gullet. His desire to prove himself may lead to bold and possibly risky choices.
